Jakiego „Pana Tadeusza” czytano w XIX wieku?

Of all the works by Mickiewicz, it is Pan Tadeusz to have the richest history. Its editions, abundant and complex reception, as well as research or scholarly interpretation forming part of this reception, all have contributed to a long life and an almost incessant presence of the work in the national and cultural awareness of the society, whilst also making it an important source of creative inspiration. The issue of what sort of Pan Tadeusz the consecutive generations of its readers and, to an extent, users of, and contributors to, culture have dealt with, appears to be of primary importance not only for the studies of nineteenth-century literary culture but also for a whole lot of historical-literary themes.

This article is an attempted analysis of the concept of animal spirituality as proposed by Adam Mickiewicz in his Paris lectures. The Mickiewicz presentation is juxtaposed with Ralph Waldo Emerson’s thought and romanticist vision of nature. The category of empathy and the idea of man’s mystical tie with the entire world come to the forefront. A theory of lost bond with the world of animals is presented, forming a premise for criticism of rationalistic concepts concerning animals and for commendation of a romantic vision of the world.

„Przemilczane strefy”: Mickiewicz Miłosza jako nieznany geniusz

This article deals with appearance of a Mickiewiczian tradition in Czesław Miłosz’s late poetic output. Mickiewicz is treated in these works as an unknown genius: a mystic, poet of secret code, and spiritual guide who foresees the possible crises of a modernity-being-conceived – one with whom Miłosz happens to struggle with a century later.

Metafizyka integracji. Elizy z Branickich Krasińskiej poszukiwanie tożsamości

This article attempts at looking at letters of the wife of the great Polish romantic poet Zygmunt Krasiński as a story of overcoming inner disintegration, a noticeable decomposition of the psyche. The spiritual dilemma was defeated by Eliza’s describing on her letter sheets the everyday life and events, political and social, going on around her, as coupled with detailed analysing of her own emotional states. This peculiar self-psychoanalysis was supported by romanticist providentialism, belief in divine and satanic interventions in the vicissitudes of the world, Manichean struggle of Good and Evil, contemplation of art and nature, afterthought on man, death and the ‘last things’, as well as self-creation.

Wiek XXI patrzy na wiek XIX. Na marginesie książki Stanisława Wasylewskiego

This article discusses "Życie polskie w XIX wieku" – the opus vitae of its author Stanisław Wasylewski. This forgotten and neglected work, never fully appreciated, has recently been republished few dozens of years after its previous issue. In spite of the author’s undisputable writing skills and, quite much so, the tone he speaks with, reading this work is not a completely easy and pleasant experience. Quite serious associations are triggered based on it – including the timeless matrix of ‘Polish life’ in general, and today’s perspective in specific.

Konrad Górski jako badacz Mickiewicza. (Próba rewizji krytycznej)

This Toruń-based scholar has bestowed us with an enormous output, part of which is a number of interpretative dissertations and editorial works focused on Mickiewicz. However, not all of the Górski essays on the Polish Romantic Bard have stood the test of time. It seems that interpretative theses by Górski form, relatively, the least powerful part of his output, in terms of our contemporary Mickiewicz scholarship. In contrast, his editorial achievements and textological findings are doubtless settled for good in research and scholarly afterthought.

The year-1864 caesura is an undisputable fact in the history of Polish literature. Scholars nonetheless do not too often tend to refer Polish positivists’ literary works to a later period in which this formation’s world-view was being shaped. Using a phenomenological-sociological concept of the world experienced, I have attempted at telling the story of Ms. Latter and Franka Chomcówna, while not neglecting the consequences of the events of the years around the Insurrection. Seen in this light, the works under analysis – Bolesław Prus’s "Emancypantki" and Eliza Orzeszkowa’s "Cham" – show the Polish society as one threatened by anomie. This is expressed in, among other things, serious disturbances of intergenerational relations, as is in the crisis of the process of reconciling and acting a social role. I conclude my article with a question, left unanswered, about the sources and the reach of the crisis of a positivist world-outlook.

Toward Cultural Comparative Studies. The Limits and Identity of Notions in Present-Day Literary-Studies Discourse

This article is an attempt at taking a broader perspective on the object, scope, and methodological orientation of today’s cultural comparative studies and on its status and role in the trans-discipline, anthropological-cultural turn in the literary-theoretic discourse at the turn of the 21st century. The present considerations are meant to confront the semantic scope of the notions ‘inter-artistic comparative studies’, ‘inter-semiotic comparative studies’, ‘inter-media comparative studies’, in the context of methodological functionality of the notion of ‘intertextuality’ and so-called ‘interdisciplinary comparative studies’. The subsequent threads in this reconstruction of the directions of our contemporary literary-theoretic discourse refer to: text as a cultural medium; multidisciplinary character of comparative studies (post-paradigmatic status of cultural comparative studies); comparativist perspectives of the anthropological turn in the humanities, literary ethnogenesis and ‘imagology’ as a comparatival methodology.

Bez cenzury. Fragment nieznanej powieści Elizy Orzeszkowej

Presented is an edition of the surviving fragment, consisting of a few sheets, of the manuscript of an unknown novel by Eliza Orzeszkowa from the latter half of 1860s – i.e. the earliest stage of her activity as a writer. The subject-matter is repressive measures extended to the Polish society following the January Insurrection of 1863/4. This is the only known artistic piece in this author’s output that takes no care of the censorship considerations. The introductory essay attempts at reconstructing the circumstances and timeframe wherein the text in question was written, also offering an afterthought on its genre status, and making references to Orzeszkowa’s biography.

Sens zapisu i logika druku. O edycjach dzienników pisarzy Młodej Polski

Discussed here are editorial problems involved in preparation for print of diaries of Young Poland-period authors remaining extant in manuscript form. The article takes a polemic approach against our contemporary editorial theories that impose observance in book-format editions of the chaotic arrangement and fragmentary composition specific to manuscripts. An ‘unliterary’ nature of personal journals is pointed out, along with their facts-related and documentary value which tells the editor to accept clear and precise methods of editing the text and setting the material in order. Based on the example of autographs and book editions of a juvenile diary by Zofia Nałkowska, personal notes and ‘appointment books’ of Stanisław Wyspiański, and diaries of Stefan Żeromski and Karol Irzykowski, the benefits and losses have been evidenced as implied by editors’ interventions, with respect to e.g. selection and choice of notes, their arrangement, deletions, complementation, and commentaries.
