BUILDING SELF CONTROL AS PART OF HEALING-NORMAN COUSINS

Author(s): Mirela Radu / Language(s): English / Issue: 32/2023

Keywords: medicine; literature; liberal arts; immortality; self-control;

Born into a Jewish family settled in America, Norman Cousins (1915-1990) had to face several vicissitudes including a misdiagnosis of tuberculosis, and even ankylosing spondilitis, cancer and a heart attack. But that didn't stop him from looking at life with optimism and teaching others to do the same. As a teenager, Cousins discovered his literary talent by editing the high school newspaper. At Columbia University Cousins gained a broad perspective on fields such as psychology and education. These two landmarks together with the leaning towards writing would guide his steps in life. Norman Cousins practiced journalism at the New York Evening Post in 1934 and literary reviews for Current History in 1935. After other five years he joined the staff of The Saturday Review of Literature whose editor was from 1940 to 1971. This literary magazine offered readers a wide range of reporting on topics as diverse as world events, science, art and medicine. His first book, The Good Inheritance: The Democratic Chance (co-written with William Rose Benét in 1942), promoted freedom as the foundation of existence. In fact, all his subsequent books and articles promote freedom as the foundation of individual or social development.

CASE STUDY ON THE CONSEQUENCES OF THE INSURER`S REFUSAL TO PAY THE COMPENSATION WITHIN THE TERMS OF CONTRACT

Author(s): Daniela Isabela Scarlat / Language(s): English / Issue: 32/2023

Keywords: optional insurance for vehicles; payment of the indemnity by the insurer; jurisprudence of courts; liability of the insurer;

In the case of goods insurance, the insurer undertakes to pay an indemnity to the insured, the beneficiary of the insurance or other entitled persons upon the occurrence of the insured risk. This article is intended to present a practical case with the help of which we understand how CASCO type insurance contracts work. The main issue of the case is the insurer`s refusal to compensate within the term, based on a case of exclusion from insurance provided in the contract. If, due to the unjustified refusal of the insurer to pay the compensation within the maximum term imposed by the insurance contract, the insured was obliged, for the company's operation, to rent a car similar to the damaged one, the correct solution of the court is to oblige the insurer to payment of the rental value of this car.

THE ROLE OF READING IN LEARNING ROMANIAN AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE

Author(s): Dănuța Magdalena Pruneanu / Language(s): English / Issue: 32/2023

Keywords: Preparatory programme of Romanian; vocabulary; teaching; learning; speaking;

The act of reading can be perceived as a complex association of processes, a fast, efficient process, a comprehensive process, an interactive, strategic, flexible process, a process aimed at a final goal, an evaluative process, a learning process and, not least, a linguistic process. This study presents the role and place of reading in the lessons of learning Romanian as a foreign language. Placing the emphasis on oral communication, as well as a dogmatic approach, sometimes superficial to the text, reveals gaps in international students’ reading skills, indispensable skills for future specialists. We identify the relationship between L1 and L2 reading and how much we can rely on the transfer of reading competence from one language to another?

Keywords: intertext; Shakespeare; reception; theatre; Hamlet;

The paper aims to analyse the intertextual games in Vărul Shakespeare/ Cousin Shakespeare by Marin Sorescu, a text that parodies Shakespeare’s reputation, portraying him as a simple man who has lost his linguistic artistry and needs Sorescu’s advice to be able to write. Shakespeare and some of his most well-known characters have a new image in this play which integrates references to plays like Hamlet, As You Like It, The Tempest, Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, Julius Caesar, Othello.

Author(s): Irina-Ana Drobot / Language(s): English / Issue: 32/2023

Keywords: mixture of genres; intertextual references; self-analysis; speculations; reflections;

The purpose of the present paper is to look at means in which, under the form of a poem, an entire story, with different versions, can be suggested to the readers. Starting from the few striking details, which are carefully chosen in this poem, a story, starting from a common life situation, of being in a process of change psychologically, as well as socially and age-related, is suggested in the mind of the readers. Reader-response theories can allow the readers who are familiar with Graham Swift’s novels, with his specific devices and types of narrators, draw on their previous knowledge of his work and on their commonly shared background with the author to interpret and understand this poem.

EUGENIU COȘERIU AND HIS MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACH TO GENERAL LINGUISTICS. LINGUISTICS AND SEMIOTICS

Author(s): Marius Golea / Language(s): English / Issue: 32/2023

Keywords: Eugeniu Coșeriu; extended paradigms; meta-linguistics; semiotics; ultimate human communication reality;

Eugeniu Coșeriu had a meta-linguistic and multidisciplinary approach to language’s phenomenon, by using all scientific instruments he could find, from linguistics to philosophy and history – amongst these, a central role was performed by semiotics. Employing semiotics meant, amongst others: using semiotic categories, identifying semiotic phenomena in language, searching for psychological explanations regarding philological processes, and identifying the semiotics’ role for interpreting the world. In the present paper we are analyzing Coșeriu’s use of semiotics in order to further widening and advancing his meta-linguistical vision upon linguistics. We have used the qualitative research method as defined by Zoltán Dörney. (2011: 24 and the followings). We have aimed to argue the multidisciplinary character of Coșeriu’s general linguistics and his extraordinary capacity of using notions from a wide variety of science branches in order to accomplish an existential meta-vision on communication.

The article presents the pedagogy of teaching through computer- based games in specific learning contexts, while empowering students with important thinking and reasoning skills. All the post pandemic used learning environments: virtual, online, hybrid, in one word, remote learning, together with the web 2.0 educational tools, are the examples of a new era, that of the student – computer interaction, in which teachers have to diversify their didactic strategy and to become real creators, with analytical thinking, while students become able to have a quicker and global access to the virtual educational resources, to complex information, better structured, more logically organized.

RENAISSANCE EUROPEAN CLOTHING. GENDER AND SOCIO-CULTURAL VALUES EXPRESSED THROUGH AESTHETIC FEATURES

Author(s): Sandra Chira / Language(s): English / Issue: 32/2023

Keywords: Renaissance; fashion history; human ideal; social values; clothing identity;

Until the 14th century, the correspondence between clothing and the personal identity of individuals manifested itself through the expression of social status, functions and occupations, and standard of living. Costumes were not means of communicating inner identity, taste or individual personality, but were primarily tools for signalling social or gender identity. Until the 14th century, one cannot speak of the existence of personal style, with the meaning of deliberate choice in the absence of conservative constraints of social, political or religious norms and rules. Starting from the 14th century, although clothing remains a form of communication of social status and at the same time a mirror of the collective spirit, the first timid attempts to individualize clothing are produced. The lower social classes are gradually trying to overcome the limits of an image determined by their modest condition, now reproducing the costumes of the bourgeois and the representatives of the upper social classes are developing impressive wardrobes. The individualization of the garments was due to their unique manufacture and not in series, having as a source of inspiration the court costume models and being in fact personalized variations of these prototypes.

COPYWRITERS VS WRITERS - CHALLENGING INTERFACES UNDER FOCUS

Author(s): Alexandra Georgiana Sălcianu / Language(s): English / Issue: 32/2023

Keywords: copywriting; fiction writer; literary devices; skills transferability; written communication;

The study is focused on analyzing the multiple interconnections between two professions that involve creativity in generating products of the written communication type, namely those of a copywriter in advertising, and of a fiction writer, respectively. It is maintained that this is a two-way process, within which one can identify recurrent elements and individual specificity, all linked in dynamic, sometimes difficult-to-grasp, manners. A range of features and skills, typical for both the literary creations, and the advertising domain copy authors, are selected from the existing multidisciplinary literature of the field, which are commented upon with a view to providing a range of aspects that could be of interest, not only in terms of literary criticism, but also at a more pragmatic level, that of educating the main stakeholders as far as the choice of high quality impacting advertising solutions are concerned. Exemplifications are provided - mostly from English speaking settings, of professional repositioning, from the copywriting job towards that of writing fiction, or the other way round, which are discussed in order to decipher their subtle mutual interferences.

Idioms, expressions, specialized vocabulary related to travelling and tourism proves to be a real challenge not only for students, but also for English speakers, especially when it comes of their understanding of tourism-related texts. The present study focuses on translating Proper Names in Tourism Terminology in English and Romanian. This paper scratched the surface of what a corpus can reveal and may give you a flavour of the possibilities open to further research.

REINTERPRETING PATRICIA HEARST’S KIDNAPPING STORY BY PSYCHOLOGICALLY MIRRORING IT WITH SUSAN CHOI’S 2003 “AMERICAN WOMAN”

Author(s): Ștefania Elena Degeratu / Language(s): English / Issue: 32/2023

Keywords: young radicals; activists; kidnapping; psychological damage; the mid-1970s;

The present paper does not intend to contradict FBI-led investigations which claimed the possibility that Patricia Hearst deliberately committed acts of violence in parallel with the brainwashing procedure she might have endured during her disappearance. Indeed, it will support Susan Choi’s initiative in granting Patricia the presumption of innocence not because she would not have voluntarily participated in a number of armed robberies in which she assumed various roles generated by the needs of the radicals, but because the explanation for her decision not to escape when she might have noticed such an opportunity, triggers old and unhealed wounds in her past. What no one took into account in all the investigations carried out against her or in her favor, was the likelihood that the lack of real maternal, paternal, and conjugal affection that she experienced during her childhood, have irremediably left their mark on her personality as an adult. Therefore, since Susan Choi’s literary protagonist, Pauline, is a reflection of Patricia Campbell Hearst, I allow myself, through the association of the two characters, to primarily penetrate the nets of their childhood. The analysis that follows thus represents the core of a teenager's revolt against her parents.

The paper aims at approaching one of the several controversial issues impacting formal education, not only at the secondary level, but throughout the entire schooling: hidden curriculum, with a special focus on the Romanian learning environment. Responding to an anthropological learning need, hidden curriculum is often woven within the educational process, producing both positive and negative effects, according to the educators’ intentions and learners’ awareness. Its benefits and drawbacks are being analyzed, with reference to Counselling, development and orientation classes, but also on the level of the organizational ethos and, in the long run, for the development of the learner’s personality.

Author(s): Alexandra-Maria Vrînceanu / Language(s): English / Issue: 32/2023

Keywords: feminism; wordplay; ideology; faithfulness; strategies;

The article is a comparative analysis of a feminist novel written by one of the few Romanian feminist authors, Magda Cârneci, and translated both by a female translator (Florica Courriol) into French, as well as by a male translator (Sean Cotter) into English. Therefore, not only is it a rare piece of Romanian feminist writing that managed to make it into the mainstream, but it also provides a chance to assess the strategies employed by the two translators. Are they true to the feminist imagery and raw-style storytelling? In attempting to answer this question, the analysis takes into account both the translated texts and the translators’ backgrounds (ideology, education, experience in translation and/or writing, etc.).

Author(s): Ștefania Elena Degeratu / Language(s): English / Issue: 32/2023

Keywords: mythology; spiritual symbols; the monomyth; masks of the universe; the fig tree;

Focusing on William Saroyan’s “Resurrection of a Life”, the present paper highlights that the short story is in fact an impressive authorial confession in regard to American society’s environment in the early 20th century. It also acquires cosmic nuances, as the author brings to the fore a series of existential questions thus striving to comprehend life as it is then struggling to change it. Starting from this assertion, the article also emphasizes the relationship between language and image when decoding texts with spiritual content. In this regard, the critical research is provided by Joseph Campbell’s 1949 “The Hero with a Thousand Faces” which presents topics such as dreams, the myth of rebirth, and many other challenges of the hero's journey. Campbell analyses humanity from a mythological and symbolic perspective, emphasizing how the stories of the whole world are actually one story: our story, of each one of us.

Author(s): Adina Carmen FRICIU / Language(s): English / Issue: 32/2023

Keywords: unconscious; conscious; self; ego; coping mechanisms;

Discovering and recovering the self is an arduous process, and it can last until old age. The individuation process is long lasting, full of trials, and it is the epitome of the self. The “journey of the hero” can and it is applied to all kinds and sorts of people. It is all the same consuming, difficult, and rewarding in the end if it is done properly. However, the “lens” with which the heroes view their lives is of the utmost importance. Having courage, the stern and correct analysis, and most of all consistency contribute to the hero’s wellbeing and view on life. The main purpose of this paper, which is part of a thesis, is to analyze Ono’s life through the prism of psychology and psychoanalysis.

Keywords: psychology; psychoanalysis; self; conscious; unconscious;

The main purpose of this paper, which is part of a thesis, is to showcase the importance of the self and at the same time how it “manifests” itself within literature. The action of this novel takes place in England, and Mr. Stevens is the main character. It is a first-person narrative with the magical power to entice us better and make us side with Mr. Stevens. However, at the same time, because he “slips” some essential things at times, we manage to have an opinion and interpretation of our own. Mr. Stevens is a pure-blood British butler; he has impeccable penmanship and wording and conveys meaning in a complex and upright way. However, that is not always the case – as we shall see in the following analysis.

Author(s): Andreea DINU / Language(s): English / Issue: 32/2023

Keywords: presupposition; advertising; discourse; purpose; functions;

The world we live in is one of communicative interaction, of the advertising that assaults us every day. Even if advertising is ephemeral, its effect is lasting. The premise of this work is that advertisements are forms of discourse that make a significant contribution to the way we build our identity. By choosing this topic I set out to examine the breadth of the advertising discourse, so that I can define the communicational act that we name advertising. From the perspective of practical experience I tried a textual analysis focused on printed advertisements, combining the practical activity with the texts accompanied by comments to show how the messages are constructed. I analyzed the relationship between language and image, advertising strategies, literary and linguistic theory.
