Classical Crossover and Its Russian and Ukrainian Interpretations

Classical Crossover and Its Russian and Ukrainian Interpretations

Classical Crossover and Its Russian and Ukrainian Interpretations

Author(s): Iryna Shylnikova / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2023

Keywords: classical crossover; music studies; music genres; mass culture;

This article aims to explore the phenomenon of “classical crossover,” a contempo- rary music trend that blends “high” and “low” elements. In addition to analyzing the genre’s main features and cultural preconditions for its emergence, the article will examine its historical origins and development. The second part of the article focuses on examples of classical crossover in Russian and Ukrainian music, with an analysis of several artists who have ventured into this new type of production, including the Terem Quartet, Anna Netrebko, Olga Chubareva, and Arina Domski. By applying historical and cultural methodology, the article suggests that classi- cal crossover has a broad audience in Russia and Ukraine, allowing musicians to introduce elite classical music to the masses. Although some may view the genre as a dilution of classical music’s distinctive qualities in order to cater to popular tastes, it also provides musicians with the opportunity to create original pieces thatmerge tradition with innovation. Considering all of the above, the author of this article aims to explore the cultural significance and impact of classical crossover in the music industry.

The History and Development of the Musical Romans as a Genre A Short Overview

Author(s): Gloria Politi / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2023

Keywords: Russian romance; romans; opera; song; history of music;

The purpose of this essay is to trace the lines of evolution of the Russian romance, which found fertile ground for its development from the mid-18th century. The genre was firmly embedded in a tradition that had originated a century and a half earlier, but its roots lay in the oral production of ancient Rus’. Despite this strong historical-anthropological imprint, the diachronic development of Russian romance, as a hybrid genre of dual nature—poetic and musical—addressed to both elite and mass audiences, is marked by a series of revivals and contaminations (mainly in 19th-century Europe, especially in Italy). The article, based on culturological, literary and historical studies, presents a brief overview of the development of the genre and its various sub-genres, such as bytovoĭ romans, romans-ballad, romans-elegii͡a, up to contemporary songs and melodies.

Finding Kokoro through the Eyes Butoh in Roberta Carreri’s Work and Pedagogy

Author(s): Simone Dragone / Language(s): English / Issue: 3/2023

Keywords: Butoh; kokoro; theatre anthropology; intercultural training; creative process; theatre pedagogy; Eurasian theatre;

In 1984, Roberta Carreri, Odin Teatret actress since 1974, saw Niwa (The Garden), a Butoh dance performance by Muteki-Sha, and attended a three-day workshop with Natsu Nakajima, direct heir of the Butoh pioneer Tatsumi Hijikata. In 1986, she traveled to Japan to work with Natsu Nakajima and Kazuo Ohno. The meeting with the Asian masters changed her approach to training and the creative process. For her, the most remarkable aspect of this apprenticeship was the work with the eyes. The way the eyes are used in Butoh conditioned Carreri’s training and the creative process of her solo performance Judith (1988). Since those same years, the Italian actress has been developing her own pedagogy. Today, she travels globally leading the workshop Dance of Intentions, which includes “flexing the eyes,” an exercise whereby the actress transmits to trainees how it is possible to shape the quality of scenic presence through the eyes. Drawing on a rich bibliography, Roberta Carreri’s work diaries, unpublished documents, and audiovisual materials kept at the Odin Teatret Archives, this paper aims to analyze how the actress embodied the ability to find the kokoro (Japanese for “heart” or “soul”), its application to the creative process and the performance, as well as her pedagogic work, and how this Butoh apprenticeship conditioned her professional identity.

The Role of Metaphoric Competence in Medical English Instruction

The Role of Metaphoric Competence in Medical English Instruction

Author(s): Slaveya Goranova / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2023

Keywords: conceptual metaphor; Medical English; metaphoric competence;

The article deals with the growing need for developing greater metaphoric competence in Medical English courses, this need being addressed, in particular, by influencing the elaboration of the major didactic tool, the textbook. The paper examines conceptual metaphors in Medical English in accordance with the stipulations of the Cognitive Metaphor Theory of Lakoff and Johnson. It highlights the dichotomy of metaphor proper and metaphoric instance, which corresponds to the existence of metaphor in thought as opposed to its embodiment in language. We analyze Medical metaphors and highlight major umbrella metaphors. The issue of dead metaphors in Medical English is addressed. We conclude that hidden metaphors in Medical English must be elucidated, such resurrection of the original source mapping playing an important role in achieving metaphoric competence. We insist that this competence is, in fact, twofold: metaphoric competence at the level of lexis and metaphoric competence at the level of thought.

Author(s): Alexandra-Lavinia ISTRATIE-MACAROV / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2023

Keywords: Zelenskyy; discourse; social media; Telegram; emotional marketing; text mining; political communication;

This article analyses the posts the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made in English on the Telegram channel “Zelenskiy / Official”, since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, 24 February 2022, and until 19September 2022, using text mining software and techniques. The study analyses readability, lexical density, the most frequent terms, correlations, collocations, and common phrases. In terms of techniques, mind-mapping, trend analysis, network analysis, n-gram generation and topic modelling were used. The positioning of this real-time public discourse is relevant since the channel has one million individual subscribers from around the world. Furthermore, Zelenskyy has been qualified as a celebrity politician (Archer and Cawston), who also gained wide electoral support through his social media presence (Dorosh, Nocon and Zakaulova). It is even more relevant to analyse the English posts since it can be inferred that they debuted with the full-scale attacks of 2022 (since the creation of the channel on 30 July 2019,only three posts in English were made before 24 February 2022).

Author(s): Oleksandr Kapranov / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2023

Keywords: digital technology; psycholinguistics; psycholinguistic discourse; systematic analysis;

The article introduces and discusses a systematic analysis of the discursive presence of digital technology (e.g., computer programs) in research articles (RAs) in psycholinguistics published in a peer-reviewed journal of psycholinguistics from 2014 to 2022. The corpus was examined for the discursive presence of digital technology and its relation to psycholinguistic research topics. Additionally, the corpus was processed in AntConc (Anthony 2022) in order to identify the frequency of lexical items associated with the discursive presence of digital technology. The results of the systematic analysis yielded the following findings: the presence of digital technology was manifested, predominantly, by software programs, as well as digital artefacts that were localised in the Results and Discussion sections of RAs, whilst the discursive presence of hardware was less frequent in the corpus. The findings were further discussed in the article.

Pro- in Two Semantic Networks (A Comparative Study of English and Bulgarian)

Pro- in Two Semantic Networks (A Comparative Study of English and Bulgarian)

Author(s): Svetlana Nedelcheva / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2023

Keywords: spatial semantics; prefix pro-; English; Bulgarian; semantic networks;

The prefix pro- is found in different languages of Indo-European origin.It has given rise to a number of prefixes and prepositions in these languages. The present article aims to construct the semantic networks of pro- in English as are presentative of Germanic languages and Bulgarian as one of the South Slavic languages and to find some intersections and variations. Most studies devoted to prefixes focus on their function as aspectual markers and do not consider their semantic contribution when they are associated with verbs. By analysing the prefix pro-, this research tries to show that prefixes also play a very important role in the semantic structuring of space. As the data reveal, pro- is more productive in Bulgarian than in English, as it combines with more varied types of base verbs. Therefore, it has developed a more branched semantic network.

The Markers of Concession in Assertive Speech Acts in American and Bulgarian Discussion Programmes

The Markers of Concession in Assertive Speech Acts in American and Bulgarian Discussion Programmes

Author(s): Deyana Peneva / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2023

Keywords: assertive speech acts; markers of concession; syntactic relations; semantics; pragmatic meaning;

The relevance of the paper is due to the exponential increase in cross cultural research interests in the area of communicative acts that are steadily becoming the matter of examination from linguistic and pragmatic perspectives. The study is aimed at defining, classifying and analysing the markers of concession identified and extracted from 6 consecutive broadcasts of two popular discussion programmes in American-English and Bulgarian (TED talks and Investbook) within the confines of the simple (extended) clause. In particular, the use of the descriptive analytical method in the data interpretation allows distinguishing the structural and pragmatic specificities of the two sets of data. The focus is on the relations of concession within the boundaries of assertive speech acts and more precisely: the representations of certain linguistic means of concession with an emphasis on their functional-semantic and structural-syntactic features as well as on their pragmatic representation. The diversity and the linguistic variability of the adverbial forms of concession are further inspected in terms of their coherent deployment and respective reflection on their semantic functions and communicative meaning.

Strategies Used in Translating IMO SMCP (2001)

Author(s): Ioana-Raluca VIŞAN,Oana Tătaru / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2023

Keywords: maritime terminology; Seaspeak; Maritime English (ME); maritime Romanian; translation strategy; translation difficulty; (non)equivalence;

The focus of this paper revolves around the translation strategies employed when translating the official version of the Standard Marine Communication Phrases - IMO SMCP (2001) - into Romanian. The source text is “an institutional document” published by the International Maritime Organization in English, and consists of a list of phrases arranged thematically. The phrases cover a number of maritime topics which represent the dominant speech acts and moves in maritime communication. In addition, the translated text is primarily intended for Romanian speaking seafarers, shore-based personnel and trainees in Romanian Maritime Education and Training Institutions. Even though seemingly devoid of difficult lexical and terminological load, most of the source language phrases can become a real challenge for the maritime language translator, in terms of dealing with lexical gaps, semi-technical vocabulary, neologisms and/or possible cases of polysemy. Therefore, the paper provides a source-text analysis and translation problems on the terminological and terminology-related levels of linguistic description in the process of translating the IMO SMCP 2001 into Romanian.

Teaching Conversation (10 Documentaries for Law Students)

Teaching Conversation (10 Documentaries for Law Students)

Author(s): Alina Costea / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2023

Keywords: communicative skills; identity; productive skills; learner autonomy; conversation; confidence;

Students of English for Specific Purposes do not learn for the sake of learning. They need to be practical and to consider English as an essential tool to help them climb the ladder in their future careers. Thus, this is why we got engaged into a challenging and rewarding project with our 2nd year of study Law students to boost their communicative skills and foremost, to guide them to better use spoken English and legal jargon in order to gain autonomy, together with confidence. In this respect, we have selected ten documentaries for these students to watch and debate on, ranging from topics such as online identity theft to women’s rights and liberties in the Arabic world or to what is to be hidden in the mind of a serial killer. Not surprisingly, our students have shown great interest into these matters as the end of term feedback revealed to us. Not only that they have improved speaking and vocabulary, but they have also stretched the boundaries of critical thinking they could reach at the start of our journey together and the art of arguing for one’s perspective over global issues connected to the field of Law. The theoretical support for our project and for this paper was provided by many scholars such as Scott Thornbury and Diana Slade’s “Conversation: From Description to Pedagogy”, orby Jim Scrievener, “Learning Teaching. The Essential Guide To English LanguageTeaching” and others.

A return to the green years with films inspired by famous novels or established scenarios from the last three decades

Le retour aux annees vertes par des films inspires de romans celebres ou de scenarios consacres, des dernieres trois décennies

Author(s): Carmen- Liliana Mărunţelu,Cristina Tamaş / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2023

Keywords: childhood; adolescence; innocence; love; cinematographic special effects; visual effects;

The analysis we propose is based on the relationship that is established, in the case of screenplays, especially between text and image, between line and sound, as a soundtrack, because the film is the director s logical vision of the complex plan of the short story or of the novel that constitutes the foundation of an artistic edifice, in an exposition that, if masterfully conducted, can become a work of art. This is the case of some famous novels whose screen adaptations have become equally famous and which appear in the Encyclopedia published in France with the title 100 Classics of the 7th Art, that bring together film critics from Paris, Berlin, London, Munich and New York. If the 80s can be considered the cinema beyond appearances in search of the great secret of metamorphosis and transgression, the90s are those of speed, in other words 20 images in 6 seconds. It is about this art at the end of the millennium, in the last decade, that we aim to deal with, but especially with those exceptional productions that return to childhood and adolescence with the joy of playfulness and innocence.

The Significance of BELF and Communication Skills: Incorporating ESP in the Core Curriculum in Higher Education - Challenges, Issues, And Opportunities

The Significance of BELF and Communication Skills: Incorporating ESP in the Core Curriculum in Higher Education - Challenges, Issues, And Opportunities

Author(s): Biljana NAUMOSKA-SARAKINSKA / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2023

Keywords: ESP; proficiency; competencies; communication; Business English;

The need for ESP is vital in equipping non-native English speakers from all fields to be competitive in the workplace, outside the academic context, regardless of where they see themselves in the future, and where they will pursue their professional ambitions; they now need to demonstrate their English proficiency in their chosen professional endeavors. As such, there is a need to incorporate ESP in the core curriculum for every Faculty in addition to the core courses of the particular field of study. However, before this can be realized, there are other issues that need to be addressed, such as the class load, the number of semesters it will be offered, and the level it will be taught at, among others. Furthermore, there are questions concerning the competencies the students will have been equipped with by the end of the course, as well as the expectations concerning the final aims and outcomes. In line with this, an important issue that needs to be addressed is that of the choice of materials to be used in the realization of the syllabus, all with the aim to best meet the learner issues, as well as possible solutions to alleviate and overcome them. In this context, it will look at and discuss the results from a survey that was conducted among students, freshmen, from the Faculty of Economics in Skopje, N. Macedonia, who had taken the elective course Business English in the fall term of 2022/2023.

The present-day society is characterized by a wide range of channels within the framework of which communication and language have a particular role in the transmission of specialized knowledge.
