Summary/Abstract: Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are an overwhelming part of economic agents operating in a market economy, having a decisive role in the economic and social areas. The financial policies pursued by Member States of the European Union, in support of them are based on sound fundamentals, the extent and impact varies from one Member State to another. In addition, under current economic crisis, the importance of public policies to support SME sector, is even more striking, the degree of vulnerability of a smaller economic entities is much higher than for the larger. In this paper we propose a comparative analysis, at EU level, of the financial measures taken by public authorities in encouraging and supporting SME sector, on the one hand, and in combating the negative effects that involved the current economic crisis, on the other hand.
