THE PROBLEMS OF VETERANS FROM 1877/1878 APPROPRIATED IN DOBRUDJA, REFLECTED IN THE PRESS OF THE TIME

Summary/Abstract: After 1878, the Romanian State granted agricultural land in Dobrogea to those who wanted to settle here. Among them were the veterans of the war of independence, who benefited from special laws to settle in the border areas of Dobrudja. However, their situation was not easy, both due to the new conditions they encountered on the way and to some abuses of the local administration or legislative deficiencies. The Romanian press of that time presented real cases of veterans who encountered difficulties in establishing new households and paying their debts to the state, for the reasons mentioned above. In many situations the government had to take into account the published articles, which created pressure on the politicians and intervene to correct the mistakes of the local administration, or initiate changes in the legislation regarding the veterans owned here. This paper reviews the press articles related to these issues, showing the importance of this informative source for the knowledge of an important stage in the evolution of Dobrudja after 1878.
