Summary/Abstract: The present article reviews the development of codified accentuation of adverbs in Modern Lithuanian. It aims to present the differences in earlier accentuation norms and to provide a theoretical basis for some stress patterns. The morphological analysis of the material led us to the following conclusions. The adverbial suffix ~(i)ai is of mediocre accentual value. If an adverb is based on an accentually weak adjective stem, in some cases, the movement of stress to the suffix -iai is blocked by certain morphonological and semantic features of the base stem. If a stem has the meaning of taste, the movement of stress to suffix is not blocked. Accentuation patterns of adverbs based on participles and adjectives are similar. Only adverbs derived form accentually weak passive participle stems have more complex stress patterns. The stress movement to the sufflx -ai in this case is governed by a set of morphonological features of the base stem. The analysis of regularities of stress patterns of Modern Lithuanian adverbs ending in -(i)ai provides a basis for the correction of accentual norms of certain adverbs recommended by the State Commission of the Lithuanian Language.
