Accentuation of Lithuanian compound male names: the circumflex of the first component

Summary/Abstract: In this paper, the main etymologies of the first components of Lithuanian compound male names are reviewed and the accentuation of these compounds is compared with the accentual properties of their base words, the modern surnames, and respective place names. The circumflex of the first stressed component of Lithuanian compound male names is most often inherited from the stressed roots of synchronically or etymologically related non-proper words. The circumflex diphthongs of the types aR, eR, iR, and uR are usually formed from the heterosyllabic sounds of unstressed roots of non-proper base words. There are some cases when the accent of the first component of the compound names differs from the accent of their possible etymons indicated in the literature. These cases deserve special attention. In some instances, one could be encouraged to look for other possible etymons, while in other cases one could have doubts about the codification of accentuation of some names. The accent of the first component of the compound male names is almost always confirmed by the accentuation of compound surnames or the place names of anthroponomical origin. The correct relation between the first components of the compound names and the non-proper words is also important from the didactic point of view, because the non-proper names help to learn the accentuation of the anthroponyms.
