Summary/Abstract: A riddle is an allegorical description of a certain subject, most often in the form of a question. Riddles, which live a life of their own, and penetrate deeply into the song and fairy-tale folklore genres, as well as into the calendar and family rites, represent a peculiar genre of folk creativity, and it invariably arouses interest with its allegorical isobasement of the real world. The Russian folk riddle has a centuries-old history. It is preserved in everyday life as an independent genre of folk creativity, it enters the song and prose folklore genres. In songs and fairy tales, heroes and heroines ask and guess riddles, and this is an assessment of the mind and intelligence of the characters.
