Summary/Abstract: The article analyses the orientation of adult education to sustained development. Adult education can create proper conditions for sustained development, contributing to essential changes and taking initiative in implementing new ideas and nurturing societal power to change. Adult education change tendencies are related to two factors. First, orientation of adult education to sustained development, i.e. to educating abilities of people who learn throughout their lives: to solve problems creatively and critically, communicate and cooperate, manage their life and work actively, investigate and assess the obtained information critically, choose proper learning methods efficiently, relate economic and social advancement to culture. Second, adult education should be qualitative as it determines person’s ambition of lifelong learning, provides the right to self-determination to individuals, contributes to self-actualisation, develops critically thinking skills and enables people to live in harmony with themselves and the surrounding environment. The performed empirical research provided the basis for the theoretical analysis which concluded that adult education has to meet learner’s needs in the labour market and personal life and, what is more important, to solve important problems of modern life that are directly related to sustained development of the society.
