Summary/Abstract: Successful implementation of scientific and technological development of the Republic of Croatia is possible only through the improvement of the application of science to everyday life. Numerous educational values found in the history of science and in the development of its methods could be capitalised on as early as in the teaching of initial science curriculum. The holistic approach to teaching sciences and social sciences seeks to reflect the unity of the phenomena at school, parental home, native region and country in accordance with the prevailing scientific and technological revolution in education, STS (Science-Technology-Society) philosophy, which requires integration and overlapping of natural and social sciences and of technology. Modernizing the teaching of science means not only introducing new scientific knowledge/content into the teaching, but also introducing methods of scientific research. Requirements to try and use the original real world scientific approach through: making hypotheses, observations, research, critical assessment and verification are specially highlighted to be used in the initial teaching of sciences. Pupils compare the results of their work to the results of other research participants. In that way the spirit of cooperation is created and communication skills are enhanced. Such type of work entails a certain degree of courage and of modesty in judging one’s own contribution to the solution of the problem researched. The basic teaching strategy is based on individual learning which enables the development of capabilities and provides training for self-education for life in the ‘learning society’. Organisation of the whole educational system stimulates pupils to be creative.
