Summary/Abstract: The summer of 2014 will bring an important task – naming the new leaders of the European Union after the elections to the European Parliament. The author attempts to sum up the 5 years of the first post-Lisbon leaders, namely H. Van Rompuy and C. Ashton, along with the long-serving president of the Commission. But the need for strong leadership focuses attention on Germany, whose reluctance to take on the burden of managing Europe is also discussed. Germany’s strength reflects not only its economic performance and is not only due to its cautious chancellor, but is the result of the weaknesses of other important member states. The end of the year 2013 was also a turning point in Easter partnerships. All masks fell and the EU is now facing a choice: fail and lose credibility, or take on the challenge of geopolitical rivalry with Russia by enhancing European engagement.
