Summary/Abstract: The European Union has entered a new phase of the crisis, this time touching thevery foundations of the integration process. The refugee crisis, caused by the EU’sinability to agree on the best solution to control the inflows of migrants from theMiddle East, made the Schengen area crumble. It is yet unclear whether one of thecrucial achievements of European unity – free movement of persons, one of the basesfor the single market – is only temporary under stress or whether the process ofdismantling the Schengen zone has already begun. The EU’s difficulties make DavidCameron’s political play more risky. How to persuade the Britons that the reformedorganization has a future and that the United Kingdom should be a part of it? Beingengaged it the internal game of survival makes active foreign policy a luxury thatcan be afforded in better times, yet the Union’s political environment is growing unstable. There is a link between actively shaping it and coping with challenges inside.
