Summary/Abstract: In 2017, the European Union was gathering momentum; it was in better shape than in previous years, but still rather looking for and choosing direction then taking actual action. The latter was supposed to begin after clearing the issue of Brexit, the presidential election in France in the spring and the parliamentary elections in Germany in the autumn. The victory of the pro-European E. Macron was important because it was interpreted as a change of tides after a period of rampant euroscepticism. Brexit took much longer than expected, but finally in December 2017 the air was cleared. Unfortunately, problems with forming the new German government caused plans for EU reform, which everybody had hoped for in September, to be put on hold. Meanwhile, problems with countries rebelling against EU rules and values (namely Poland and Hungary) deepened, and defining anew the geographical scope of integration became a more crucial issue than many European politicians wanted it to be.
