Summary/Abstract: Since June 2016, the European Union is facing the perspective of Brexit – the result of a referendum surprisingly won by the proponents of “taking back” the country from the clutches of Brussels. The uncertainty about the future of the integration project is fuelled by the outcome of Brexit and by forecasts for the French Presidential election set for spring 2017, which give good chances to Marine Le Pen, who is pushing for Frexit. Chancellor Merkel – the one and only remaining pillar of stability, is challenged by Martin Schulz on national political ground. In these rather unusual circumstances High Representative Federica Mogherini presented EU’s new global strategy, discussing a variety of challenges and threats. Doubt and uncertainty are in stock for the future of the EU, and scenarios that used to seem rather eccentric – differentiated integration in the eve of a disruption of transatlantic ties – are now a reasonable choice.
