Summary/Abstract: The new leaders of the European Union – Donald Tusk, Jean-Claude Juncker andFederica Mogherini – are facing old challenges: tensions between the member statesconcerning austerity measures, lack of strategy in thinking about the future in generaland foreign policy in particular. The new challenges are no less demanding –the crumbling common front towards Russia, or the strong Eurosceptic oppositionthreatening to paralyze the European Parliament. The author asks whether they areup to the task and assesses their strengths and weaknesses. The new parliament isa big unknown – some insight is offered on this issue. The problem of Russia’s alliesin Europe is discussed in the context of the conflict over Ukraine and leads to a moregeneral overview of EU’s foreign policy, which is looking for form and direction –and not finding them, despite growing pressure from the outside world.
