Summary/Abstract: The basic economic activity – work, is changing along with society. The changes of the economic system and the meaning of work have an essential impact on workers and influence their lives and their identity.This article characterises the shifts and changes of the work place and discusses the changing requirements placed on workers. Due to the fast growing importance of information and communication technologies (ICT) in the economy and the society, we quantify the share of the ICT sector in selected economies and analyse the use of ICT in the Czech Republic. Illustrated on the example of university graduates, we further examine the growing requirements placed on workers in the Czech economy. According to the principle of lifelong learning there are arguments to intensify the public support of computer and Internet literacy of citizens.
