Summary/Abstract: With both the largest farmland area per inhabitant in the EU and one of the least competitive farm structures, Romania’s agriculture is (still!) considered as being an important sector for the country. In the background of this highly emphasized statement by post-‘89 governances lay a rather contrasting reality: the fact that Romanian agriculture is largely semi-/subsistence based, with low productivity, and uncompetitive on the EU market. With a bit more than one quarter of the agricultural surface used by agricultural holdings based on private capital, and with a puzzle/maze shape of the agricultural territory due to the exceedingly fragmentation of Romania’s agricultural land, will be hardly possible to develop this sector according to „productivist” model. Unfortunately the reminiscences of the communist times with its „golden agriculture age” and high production figures (often fake!), is haunting us and keeps away of any alternative developmental strategy for this sector. On the contrary, thru various legal proposals (i.e. „force and fear”) the Governmental bodies try to readjust the reality (such the one discussed here and described by the July 2011 provisional results of Romania - General Agricultural Census 2010) accordingly.
