Summary/Abstract: The total crisis in which the posttotalitarian societies find themselves has outlined the dimensions of the crisis of identity. Past and present have turned into incommensurable parts of the life of the individual and the community. The conflict, although determined negatively, has engaged the attention and the efforts of a large part of the people. The representations of achieving a success in life, the dimensions of the personal efforts and I he individual presence in society arc subjected to transformation. The impossibility of the subject ot take up a position to his own life world is the basic characteristic of the figure of the Partial man. He is not fixed entirely in any field of his self-expression as an individual. Neither the complete success, nor the total failure are possible for him. The loss of proper grounds in the classical spheres of social identity like work and social status leads to the construction of compensatory identities, which replace the value of one's own efforts by belonging to. The growth of the "denseness" of the repressive attitudes in society corresponds directly to the loss of a perspective of a proper, positive self-realization.
