Summary/Abstract: The study Zniternění a zvnějšnění v textovém procesu (“Interiorization and Exteriorization in the Text Process”) is concerned with the boundaries that are given to a subject of research by structuralist methodology. The study refers to a certain one-sidedness with which the structural textological method concentrates the act of publication and exteriorizing aspects of the creative process (the reception approach), resulting in neglect of the production dimension of the creative act. This study supplies both an explanation of the cause of the above-mentioned one-sidedness, referred to in connection with the rise of Mukařovský’s study Záměrnost a nezáměrnost v umění (“Intentionality and Unintentionality in Art”) which has influenced generations of Czech structuralists, and explicates how many researchers have attempted to break away from excessive absorption in the invariant towards the study of variants (M. Červenka) or towards a conception of versions of a work as variations (M. Otruba). The key point of view in the solving of the one-sidedness and re-establishing of an interest not in the sign dimension but in the material dimension of the work of art was presented by the reflections of J. M. Lotman on autocommunication in literature and culture (his book Universe of the Mind). However, it was Zdeněk Mathauser who pointed out the insufficient reflection on the material dimension of the literary work on the part of Czech structuralists.
