Strategies for providing flood protection implemented in the municipalities of San valley

Summary/Abstract: Two most important strategies are implemented today to ensure the safety of flood. One of them is the management of flood involving the “removal of water from the people”, the second is to leave the rivers and adapting human activities to cyclic floods. The research in the municipalities of San valley indicated the implementation of the first of these strategies and revealed significant educational needs relative to the other. Adapting development of river valleys to cyclically occurring natural floods should be the basis for the development of flood plains. The areas where the implementation of this strategy is not possible has to be protected in accordance with a scheme which was previously implemented. The introduction of implemented worldwide strategy “of leaving the rivers” is in line with European legislation on water management. Examined the San valley municipalities plan to expand the technical means of flood protection. Undervalued and often unknown is the role of non-technical security.
