Summary/Abstract: Naturally functioning riparian areas have the significant retention capacities and thus are an eco-innovative element of mitigating the effects of the extreme phenomena such as floods and droughts. The development of these sites should therefore preserve the natural retention capacity, provide the economic benefits, and be beneficial for the local communities as well. The aim of the research carried out in the Wisłok Valley was to identify the perception of floods and droughts by the owners of small farms and to figure out what their tendency to change the use of floodplains was. The farmers do not see the positive, fertile impact of floods on their fields because of the fact that the negative impact of floods is more emphasised on arable land. The impact of a drought is more assessed on the smaller grasslands than on an arable land. However, there is no tendency to convert these smaller grasslands into the permanent pasture, where losses are assessed as lower.
