Summary/Abstract: At the background of statistical data on a growing group of people who are not married, the paper ana¬lyzes the general social conditions causing celibacy nowadays. In particular, these are the characteristic for our times processes and phenomena which destory the traditional type of premarital forms of communica¬tion and family — the scientific-technological revolu¬tion, the informational over-loading, the migration, the urbanization, the emancipation of women and the growth of women's employment, the sexual revo¬lution, etc. They are connected with fundamental changes in the economy, in everyday life, education, in the moral and in public opinion, as well as with the very process of democratization of the social life. At a macro-level these factors are comparatively most distant to the demographic behaviour of the individual, concerned with the delay or denial of marriage. On a mesolevel (the family) and on a micro-level (personality) they influence other types of fac¬tors for celibacy. The indicated changes reflect for example on the rising generation, reshape the value system of the personality, changing its representations on marriage, family and love, resulting in deviating from the traditional marital behaviour. The new con¬ditions of life do not cause, however, general celibacy, but affect only those persons who are objectively and/ or subjectively predisposed.
