THE SHORTEST PATH FROM FLATLAND TO SPACE

Summary/Abstract: In the present paper we consider methods of using web 2.0 technologies for showing the interrelation between variational problems and space and plane differential and analytic geometry. Variational problems refer to the maximization or minimization of functionals and are deeply related to the geometry of curves and surfaces in space or plane curves and domains. The Moodle open source platform for e-learning provides the canvas on which Flash, 3ds animations and Java applets are put together for a better understanding of the theory. Online games along with quizzes based on theoretical knowledge provide an interesting e-learning method for teaching these notions.
