Polish dramaturg y at the State Theatre: quantities, tendencies, impact

Summary/Abstract: Dwelling on the notions and concepts of post-colonial theory (subjective selfhood, post-colonial translation as in Ampka: 2004) this article explores the productions of Polish dramaturgy at the Lithuanian State Theatre in the period of the First Independence. Although such productions were not numerous yet it is possible to discriminate between two main tendencies of how Polish dramaturgy was employed and received. Representation of Lithuanian past in historical dramas was part of establishing a subjective Lithuanian selfhood, whereas historical Polish dramas depicting the subject were rejected as a continuation of discourse of formerly hegemonic culture. The second tendency in the employment of Polish dramaturgy appeared in association with the general aim to create an aesthetical framework in theatre which could be regarded as typically Lithuanian. Thus, the modernist dramas by Jerzy Żuławski (the single Polish playwright who was staged at the State Theatre and who was not dealing with Lithuanian history) become interwoven in the pattern of quest for a theatre that could accommodate in-betweenness equally favouring the local and the global.
