Summary/Abstract: In this article the author dwelling on the notions of the politics of memory and of the critical memory analyses two examples of representation of the Interim period in the contemporary Lithuanian theatre. The play “Madagascar” (2004) by Marius Ivaškevičius and libretto for operetta “Kipras, Fiodoras and others” (2002) by Herkus Kunčius both reveal a case of intertextual, self reflexive and above all critical outlook upon the canonized history of the first Lithuanian independence. The author argues that somewhat a brutal deconstruction of the common historical images in these plays provides an opportunity to establish a highly personalized attitude towards the otherwise very sterile historical narrative.
