Summary/Abstract: Opening to local community through professional lifelong learning offer which is adjusted to labour market needs is one of the challenges that universities need to face in the 21st century. Apart from postgraduate studies, shorter training forms, i.e. open trainings, trainings prepared for individual entities, educational counselling have an important place in this offer. During the demographic decline, the offer may be an important additional source of financing for universities. On the other hand, the increase of engagement of universities is compatible with the market demand for professional educational services connected with the growing importance of human and creativity in companies operating in the turbulent market environment. The article presents issues connected with strengthening the role of universities in shaping competitiveness of companies. The following two aspects are discussed: activities connected with preparing lifelong learning offer adjusted to labour market needs as well as problems connected with the issue of recognition of qualifications obtained outside the higher education system. The analysis which is carried out focuses on factors which the authors thought to be of key importance for universities’ engagement. The university ranking in the area of LLL is an original concept of the authors of this paper.
