Summary/Abstract: Representative of the Neo-Alexandrian School, brother of Saint Basil the Great, Bishop of Nyssa and also called "pillar of Orthodoxy" within the Second Ecumenical Synod (Constantinople, 381), Saint Gregory of Nyssa (335-394/395) is noted by its vast and rich work, which includes exegetical, dogmatic, ascetic-spiritual writing, homilies, speeches and letters, the author being concerned with closely describing the human advancement towards the path of completeness. In this study, I set myself to highlight why Saint Gregory defines freedom as the highest good. I will also emphasize how the author presents the doctrine of faith regarding the origin of good and evil, as well as the changing nature of the human being. After I assert the need for a constant balance between body and soul, I shall point out by using Saint Gregory’s arguments the importance of good deeds as the fruit of freedom, in the context of the continuous ascent of Man towards God.
