Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to discover the fate reserved to American musicals when they come to France. We establish three translation strategies: the complete adaptation of the libretto, which appears to be the most usual one; the partial adaptation, which, even ifit seems unexpected, meets the demands of production; and the nonadaptationof musicals that are internationally known. To illustrate these three translation strategies, we consider twelve musicals produced for the French stage between 1950 and 2017. We end our study with a quick reflection on the status of the adapter of musicals.
