Management of Cultural References in the American Musicals: Translation or Adaptation?

Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses the adaptations of several American musicals, such as The Sound of Music (1959) and Fiddler on the Roof (1964), into French. It examines the treatment of the references by the adaptors. Some of them had to be changed because a musical is destined to be played and not to be read. If there are some speech impediments in the musical theater, this can be seen as a distraction from the rest of the show. The audience might feel uneasy since they do not understand what the actors are saying and/or singing. Thus, in order to avoid this lack of understanding some alterations have to be made. The aim of the paper is to explore and to understand the choices of translation made by the French adaptors in order to help the audience to enjoy the adaptations of the American musicals.
