Keywords: historian Adolfas Šapoka; “The History of Lithuania”; Lithuanian historiography in the 20th century.

Summary/Abstract: Adolfas Šapoka edited the textbook “The History of Lithuania”, which was first published in 1936. This work is considered to be the most popular publication produced by the historians of the Republic of Lithuania in 1918–1940. In the Soviet times, it symbolized an independent Lithuanian state and its history. The document, published in the article, is a letter from the authors of this work, in which they emphasized that the textbook consumed more work than expected, and its editor appealed to the Minister of Education with a request to increase royalties for the authors and developers, arguing that the textbook preparation concerns not only educational didactics but also academic scholarship. The authors should be rewarded not only for a simple preparation of a textbook, but for one of the first books summarizing the history of Lithuania. This was the main purpose of the letter to the Ministry of Education, which, up to now, has not been mentioned in the Lithuanian historiography. This letter to the Ministry of Education, with Adolfas Šapoka and Zenonas Ivinskis’ signatures, is dated by August 21, 1935 and is kept in the Lithuanian Central State Archive, the Ministry of Education Fund (fund 391, digest 4, file 1806, list 49–53, microfilm). The Lithuanian Martynas Mažvydas National Library Manuscripts Section, Zenonas Ivinskis Fund (fund 29-1677, list 1–5) keeps the copy without signatures.
