Summary/Abstract: In our paper we studied the time demand, mode and average distance of commuting based on the last censuses. The average commuting time hardly changed between 1990 and 2001, but it increased by 9% between 2001 and 2011, which shows the growing proportion of commuters among employees. We pointed out that commuting within Budapest needs more time than at the countryside, but employees living and working in the same district need slightly more time to get to their workplace than at the countryside. Regarding the mode of travel there were negative changes in the last dec-ades, the proportion of cars in the modal-split in-creased from 12-13% (1990) to 50% (2011), meanwhile the share of public transport decreased. Parallel with these two processes the average commuting distance increased too.
