THE ROLE OF FOREST EUROPE IN THE MANAGEMENT AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF FORESTS IN THE EUROPEAN REGION

Summary/Abstract: Among the European cooperation structures and mechanisms which are relevant for the management and sustainable development of forests, the Ministerial Conference for the protection of forests in Europe – Forest Europe stands out. The activities and actions carried out within this political process regard mainly essential thematic areas, such as: (a) developingand updating policies and instruments for the sustainable management of forests; (b) monitoring, evaluating and implementing commitments regarding forests; (c) promoting education and research in the forest sector; (d) raising awareness towards the specific issues of forests and the value of forest ecosystem services. Although the Forest Europe ministerial commitments and resolutions are not mandatory from a legal point of view, by voluntarily accepting them, the signatories acknowledge their importance and manifest their wish and interest in realizing a sustainable protection and management of the forests.
