Summary/Abstract: The current paper suggests a comparative consideration of the language learning programs “Harry--befangen in der Zeit” and “Guadalingo” in order to highlight the importance of the technology-enhanced environments for the narrative strategies to manifest themselves, and for the learning process to advance. By focusing on the important role played by humor in the former, the current proposal sees the contract between the narrator and learner as a key factor in the latter’s linguistic progress. In the light of the narrative concept used, which is enabled by the technological media, “Harry befangen in der Zeit” reveals itself to be an invaluable source of motivation for beginner’s to intermediate learners, as it triggers learning-friendly attitudes among those often feel overwhelmed by the linguistic content, wherefrom the importance of a constant support. On the other hand, a closer look at the legitimation of the play-based approaches, in the case of “Guadalingo”, grants a better understanding of a specificity of the digital language programs--learning as a rewarding experience.
