TRUTH AND FICTION IN THOMAS MANN`S NOVELLA “DEATH IN VENICE”. AN ANALYSIS OF LITERARY MOTIFS

Summary/Abstract: The novella” Death in Venice” by the German author Thomas Mann strikes with its intertextuality, abounds in mythological connections and in all sort of allusions: literary, religious, art-historical, beginning with the ancient times to the eighteenth century on. “Death in Venic”e is widely read as a “Künstlernovelle”, a novel about an artist, but it is not only that. The theme of the “artist” offers a narrative playground for a widerange of intimate views that were never articulated openly by such a cautious and artistically disguised author like Thomas Mann.
