Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with a short analysis of the masculine and feminine characters in the early work of German author Thomas Mann. Among the recurrent motifs in his early work, the motif of androginy plays an important role. His characters undergo a certain schematism regarding their masculine or feminine features. Analyzing different types of characters we can say that the most appealing character in his early work is the one that corresponds to that undefined beauty embodied by the androgyne
