Summary/Abstract: Thomas Mann’s encounter with psychoanalysis wasn’t revolutionary at all. The German writer sees in psychoanalysis rather a well-known path he was already going on after reading Schopenhauer and Nietzsche, who are, in Mann’s view, the forerunners of psychoanalysis. Thomas Mann stated that he was used to think in terms of psychoanalysis long before he had direct contact to it. This paper analyzes Thomas Mann’s opinion regarding the connections between psychoanalysis, Schopenhauer and Nietzsche.
