Summary/Abstract: Thomas Mann's novella ''The Transposed Heads” undertitled “A Legend of India” is inspired by Indian mythology. The philosophical foundation is the conflict between mind and body, nature and culture and between anthonimies in the human character. The human struggle lies in the attempt to unify those contrasts. The symbol of this unity is the androgyn, that appears in the novella as a trinitarian union of Platonic influence. Because of Thomas Mann´s distinctive ironic stile, the story has been considered to be a “golden parody”. But we also agree that due to the redemptive value of the self-sacrificing love constellation, the novella can be interpreted as an androgynous utopia.
