Social support to the parents expecting a child with a lethal defect

Summary/Abstract: In this article I reassess the phenomenon of the assistance provided by a discussion group, which gathers relatives of children with Edwards Syndrome. As an invisible observer, I followed the functioning of this community from February 2011 until almost the end of 2013. The analysis of nearly 2000 statements obtained from the examined subjects illustrates that they are an invaluable source of emotional support for each other, which is informative, evaluative and contributes to making friends and developing communication beyond the forum. However, the most important thing is that those who keep in touch support each other emotionally. It can be seen in many ways, such as giving these parents hope for a better future and providing them with positive examples of successful dealing with the trauma.
