Summary/Abstract: The text analyses selected myths concerning sources of creation, such as the Biblical account of the fight between Jacob and Angel (the identity myth which treats creation as fight and struggle) or the Greek or Roman myth about the beginnings of figurative painting (the anthropological – exis- tential myth). The analysis concerns both the historical presence of these myths in the culture of the past epochs, and their presence in contem- porary art and culture. Including their impact on the art of female art- ists connected with feminism and on theoretical considerations devoted to feminism, in which issues of identity (also gender identity) play a key part. The text also analyses non-European myths and narrations concern- ing artistic creation – the role of Genji monogatari in Japanese culture and the message coming from the frame story of One Thousand and One Nights book (Islamic culture).
