Health behaviors of cancer patients

Summary/Abstract: Breast cancer is a serious public health problem. Healthy lifestyle plays an important role in breast cancer prevention, improving the health of cancer patients, subjective health assessment, extended survival rates. The aim of the present research was to assess health behaviors of cancer patients before and after the cancer diagnosis. The questionnaire study was conducted among 60 women who are breast cancer survivors at the association “Łódzki Klub Amazonka” in Lodz. Before the cancer diagnosis, 20% of respondents did physical exercise lasting at least 30 minutes, 2-3 times a week. Moreover 57% of respondents consumed alcohol, usually on weekends, 20% of respondents smoked cigarettes daily, and 45% of women were passive smokers. Nearly 48% consumed fruits and vegetables once a day. After the diagnosis, 25% of respondents did physical exercise lasting at least 30 minutes, 2-3 times a week. Nearly 48% of respondents consumed alcohol, usually on weekends,12% smoked cigarettes daily, 38% were passive smokers. And 38% of women consumed fruits and vegetables once a day. Lifestyle and health behaviors of cancer patients did not differ significantly before and one year after the cancer diagnosis. Educational campaigns on healthy lifestyles and health behaviors are needed to reduce the risk of cancer. It is also necessary to increase the role of medical professionals in shaping health behaviors of cancer patients and provide appropriate counseling
