Summary/Abstract: The present study analyzes, on the basis of a novel written by Gregor von Rezzori (1914–1998) and entitled Ein Hermelin in Tschernopol (1958)—translated into English first as The Hussar, and then as An Ermine in Czernopol—the Habsburg myth of Austrian literature in the context of the cultural-ideological paradigm of Central Europe (a multiethnic, multilingual, and multi-confessional area). Rezzori fractures and reshapes the imperial myth, alternating between gravitas, irony, and the burlesque.
