Tolerance and the abuse of tolerance

Summary/Abstract: The dissertation promoted several personal ideas and opinions in relation to tolerance. While pointing out the virtues of tolerance in the relationships among persons, groups and large collectivities, including nations, the author warns about the social danger of an excess of tolerance and the abuse of tolerance for antisocial behaviour and deeds, which infringe upon the rights of other people. Society should pay more attention to rights, but to duties as well. Civic education in respect for equality and diversity and against discrimination should rely, since early childhood, on the cultivation of tolerance, respect for one's fellow beings, equal in their dignity and rights, and good understanding.
