- Summary/Abstract:If this collection gives an overview of the harvest of the last twenty-five years, it is because, on the one hand, Marxist historiography has been able, on more than one point, to accept the results of previous research, that, on the other hand, many historians of the previous era, while freeing themselves from outmoded conceptions which no longer met the modern requirements of science, appropriated the philosophical foundations of dialectical materialism and that finally, even in the period preceding the year 1945, one could sense in some works a foretaste of the Marxist conception of history. - Summary/Abstract:A new stage in the evolution of historical bibliography began with the creation, in 1955, of the bibliographical section of the historical institute of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, which works in collaboration with the bibliographical section of the institute history of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. It was agreed to resume the regular publication of an annual historical bibliography recording Czech as well as Slovak literature. The first two volumes include literature from the years 1955 and 1956.13 The method of recording literature has remained the same; however, a new classification has been established to meet the needs of Marxist historiography. The choice of literature is more considered; only important works are recorded by eliminating a number of small heterogeneous articles and news. The bibliography also records foreign literature relating to Czechoslovakian history.

- Summary/Abstract:It is important to create in the future the necessary conditions for an increasingly intense collaboration of archivists in the work of the auxiliary historical sciences. Indeed, their development is indissolubly linked to the evolution of all Marxist scientific work in the field of archives. It is also impossible for the regrettable situation to continue where, since the end of the war, there has been no independent journal of auxiliary historical sciences, a journal which would be called upon to replace the former Časopis archivní školy (Revue de l'Ecole des Chartes) . There is no doubt, in fact, that neither Sborník archivních prací (Collection of archival works) nor the Revue des archives, cited above; nor finally any other of the current historical journals can, despite the best will, satisfy these needs which are nevertheless of capital importance for our historical science and for our archives.

- Summary/Abstract:The old requirements and knowledge of the conservation of numismatic materials, born rather from practice, were increased by the chemical work of K. Komárek121 It was especially after the Second World War that the importance of good catalogs of public museum collections as well as the great role of exhibitions which tend to highlight the economic function of money. Apart from the materials themselves, namely coins, this is done using photographs mounted on thick cardboard, graphic tables, maps, images, comparison tables, etc. // It can be concluded that during the years 1936 to 1960, the publications of Czechoslovak numismatists took off sharply. Because of the subjects of all the fields they offer us, until now, only a mosaic of analytical works. The fact remains that creative minds of the years to come can use it to draw an overall picture of the coinage of our countries.

- Summary/Abstract:For long centuries, Slovakia was incorporated into Hungary and, being under the yoke of harsh national oppression, did not constitute a well-defined geographical unit. This is precisely what has given historico-geographical problems a very topical character over the last decades, when in particular the question of the borders between Slovakia and Hungary had a prominent place in political events. . Among Slovak historians, it is above all F. Bokes who has devoted several works to historico-geographical problems. He first sketched an overview of the evolution of the Slovak national territory from the Empire of Great Moravia to the present day and then published, in German, a more detailed study in which he subjected to a thorough analysis certain documentary materials, ^ finally, while limiting itself however to the 19th century, a study accompanied by documentary materials. However, Bokes' conclusions are not always based on a detailed study of the original literature and documents and are limited to justifying, with the help of historical arguments, the borders of Slovakia as they had been fixed by the Treaty. of Trianon.

- Summary/Abstract:Prehistoric studies concerning the territory of Czechoslovakia have passed through several stages of evolution over the last quarter of a century. They necessarily depended on the activity with which research was carried out in the excavation sites and which had a direct influence on literary production. Even before the Second World War, the archaeological institutes as well as the large museums had been oriented towards some systematic explorations, but during the war and the occupation, the activity of all Czech university institutes was suspended and the explorations of the institutes of archeology and museums significantly restricted. It was only after the restoration of state independence in 1945 that prehistoric studies were able to take on a new impetus, assured in a stable manner by the creation of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in Prague and the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava, which provided the institutes with the means necessary for carrying out explorations in the field as well as for their regular publication activity. At the present time, the main centers of archaeological work are the two Institutes of Archeology of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, that of Prague and that of Brno, as well as the Institute of Archeology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Nitra. They all have at their disposal a large number of scientific workers, specialist technicians, laboratories and modern means of exploration. In addition to these bodies, there are others: the university institutes of prehistory in Prague, Brno and Bratislava, the Slavic institute of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, the major central museums, in particular the National Museum in Prague, the Moravě Museum in Brno, the Slovak Museum in Bratislava, finally some of the regional museums with their archaeological sections.

- Summary/Abstract:In the years from 1935 to 1960, it was mainly archaeological research that predominated in the studies of the protohistory of the Slavs on the territory of the Czechoslovak Republic, and it was the archaeologists who made the most important contributions to the solution of the various outstanding issues. (See above the report of the archaeological work). On the other hand, given the fragmentary nature of the written sources, the proper historical investigations have been able to make little progress in the exploration of this period. Let us mention at least the article by V. Chaloupecký devoted to Samon1 where the author tried, with more or less success, to bring a new interpretation to the term "negotiator" used by Frédégaire, then a new commented edition by the author, known as a “Bavarian geographer”,2 the articles analyzing the description of Prague by Ibráhím-ibn-Jakúb,3 finally isolated attempts to make use of Hebrew sources that can be used for the study of Czech protohistory.

Polisensky that we owe a general appreciation of Czechoslovak as well as foreign literature devoted to the problems of the Thirty Years War and published until now. A vast edition of abundant documentary sources, due to V. Liva enriches our knowledge not only with regard to military events, but also about the economic repercussions caused by the war in the Czech lands. The edition informs us, with the help of short regests, of the documents deposited in the so-called "old military fund" of the Central National Archives in Prague.

- Summary/Abstract:A fundamental shift in research on the history of the pre-Munich Republic took place only after the liberation of Czechoslovakia by the Red Army. The expulsion of the occupiers and traitors, the establishment of the new people's democratic order, the seizure of government power by the workers, all this created the conditions for historical research to embark on a completely new path. It was finally possible to proceed to the true and correct scientific interpretation of the birth of the pre-Munich Republic, its development and its fall. Of considerable importance there was the fact that the people's governmental power undertook the systematic establishment of the vast corresponding archival funds, gradually making them accessible and updating them. During the first years of people's democratic Czechoslovakia, the development of historical research was hampered by a marked lack of workers specialized in the most recent history, the terrorist measures of the occupiers having made their professional training impossible until 1945.

- Summary/Abstract:The period of the Second World War is one of the most tragic and at the same time one of the most dramatic epochs in the life of the peoples of Czechoslovakia. Nazi aggression took me to the physical existence of the Czech and Slovak nations. The Czechoslovak people rallied their struggle for national liberation to the efforts of all the democratic forces of the world. The liberation of Czechoslovakia by the Red Army enabled the Czechoslovak people not only to realize their ideals of national freedom but also to acquire their social liberation. The historical significance of the liberation of Czechoslovakia in 1945 lies precisely in the creation of the preconditions for the transformation of the capitalist order into socialism.

- Summary/Abstract:The youngest sector of Czechoslovak historiography is occupied with the most recent period of Czechoslovak history — the development of people's democracy in Czechoslovakia. The main source for knowledge of this period are above all the articles and speeches of Klement Gottwald who, at the head of the Communist Party, led until 1953 the construction of socialism in Czechoslovakia. Among his speeches and articles containing the principle lines for Party and government policy, there are numerous evaluations, analyzing past development. As the Central Committee of the Communist Party represents, among other things, also the center of Marxist thought in Czechoslovakia, the speeches, evaluations and analyzes of its representatives are a valuable instrument for the entire Marxist historiography in Czechoslovakia. Of analogous importance are the minutes of the congresses and conferences of the Communist Party, as well as the resolutions and minutes of the sessions of the Central Committee.

- Summary/Abstract:Historically, the attention and efforts of Czech and Slovak historians have been directed towards national history rather than general history. This was because Czech and Slovak historians, who were never very numerous, considered it their natural and primary duty to concentrate all their efforts on studying the history of their nation. It was thus, especially during the national oppression from which the Czechs and Slovaks had to suffer under the Habsburg monarchy, that Czechoslovak historiography, the development of which went hand in hand with the whole cultural life of the two nations, was able to fulfill its noble task in the national revival of Czechs and Slovaks.

(The history of natural science and technology)
- Author(s):Luboš Nový
- Language:French
- Subject(s):History
- Page Range:407-420
- No. of Pages:14
- Summary/Abstract:Along with the effort to give a more complete picture of the evolution of society, there appeared the need to replace the natural sciences and technology in this evolution and to determine their role in it. In Czech historiography, this trend was increasing especially in connection with the recognition of the decisive role of the productive forces in this development. Nevertheless, knowledge of the evolution of the natural sciences and technology is also of interest for these sciences themselves and for the philosophical generalization of their results, thus creating one of the important links between the social and natural sciences. This is why more systematic research was asserted in Czech historiography, especially after 1945, research in which one proceeded from occasional articles to an in-depth study of the material and to the first attempts to draw general conclusions from it in synthetic works. . The research was naturally centered on the study of problems relating to the history of natural sciences and technology in the Czech lands and in Slovakia.

- Summary/Abstract:In our brief overview of the most important works on the history of literature and language that have appeared in the last 25 years, attention is primarily directed to studies that are useful for the work of the historian. In recent times, it is felt in the thematic orientation and in the method of literary history, as indeed in all the social sciences, the entry on the scene of Marxist scholars who do not consider the search for facts as the end in itself but strive to place the results of their studies in the current of historical development and to determine their direct social relations. And it should be noted that thanks to this path, Czech literary history has acquired many positive results expressed not only by numerous titles of studies but also by substantial contribution to the knowledge of national history.
