- Keywords:literary language; epistolary style; notions of 'letter writing'; types of letters; etiquette of letter templates; terminology used
- Summary/Abstract:Nikola Mihaylovski is best known in the history of the modern Bulgarian literary language as a co-founder, along with Ivan Momchilov, of the Tarnovo School of Linguistics and Spelling. His contribution to the formation of the epistolary style of the modern Bulgarian literary language has not been studied so far. The article examines his book Little Bulgarian Letter book, 1868. His theories about the types of letters are presented. The etiquette of letter templates that he presents in his textbook is analysed, as is the specific terminology used.

- No. of Pages:11
- Keywords:historical sociolinguistics; linguistic variants; social network theory; orthography; language standardization
- Summary/Abstract:Letters from Yordanka Filaretova, a native of Sofia, to Maria Burmova are analysed for linguistic variants before the official codification of Bulgarian orthography in 1899. Filaretova's mobility, specifically her long-term residence in Istanbul, suggests loose (i.e. more dispersed rather than dense) social networks that correlate with innovations in linguistic norms and the diffusion of linguistic change. The paper thus contributes to the study of the linguistic history of norms listed below, that is, the value of language variants by speakers who were not centrally involved in debates about what language variants should eventually be chosen for the Bulgarian literary language.

- Keywords:Bulgarian Revival; Hr. Pavlovich; „Pismennik obshtepolezen“ (1835); New Bulgarian literary language; literary idiom; syntax
- Summary/Abstract:The second quarter of the 19th century was associated with the initial construction of the New Bulgarian literary language, a period in which the Slavonic-Bulgarian type of language formation dominated, containing spoken and bookish elements in an unbalanced ratio. In the works of some authors, it is closer to the Church Slavic language, while in others – to common speech. The observations on the books Pavlovich wrote in the 1830s (arithmetic and grammar) show that they had the second, more liberal line of language construction. This article aims to defend this thesis by analyzing „Pismennik obshtepolezen“ (1835) at a syntactic level and to highlight the merits of the author in the affirmation of syntactical norms, which is a point of interest in view of the development of the Bulgarian literary language.

- Keywords:Bulgarian Revival; politeness; clichés; letters; letter book
- Summary/Abstract:In the proposed article, the grammatical and lexical means of expressing politeness are subjected to analysis by means of the descriptive analytical method, as are the clichés for ending in 60 sample letters, recommended in the ‘Pismovniche’ tutorial. The authors, Stefan Popov and Petar Avramov, advise using second-person pronouns and plural verbs in all letters addressed to parents, close relatives, and other people to whom students in grades 5 through 8 send letters. This recommendation is interpreted as being introduced by certain French sources used in compiling the tutorial; it is also influenced by trends in the last decade of the Bulgarian Revival. The lexical means of courtesy (address and title) are an episode of the gradual imposition of the titles Mr. and Mrs.; the vocative forms of nouns naming the addressees are a natural norm in the language. The clichés at the end of the letters help their addressees to master the art of correspondence.

- Keywords:Bulgarian Revival; open letters; History of Bulgarian dialectology; collecting dialectological material; Teodosij Ikonomov
- Summary/Abstract:During the second half of the 19th century, Bulgarian writers stressed the necessity of collecting and studying all Bulgarian dialects as one of the essential conditions of building a unified and common standard language. Feeling compelled to state their opinions openly by participating in the public debate, since the problems of the language were perceived as matters of paramount importance for the future development and well-being of the nation, they chose to voice their understandings by adopting the method of open letters. In this context, in 1868 the editor of the magazine “Obsht trud” Teodosij Ikonomov published his “Program for collecting samples of oral folk literature and local dialects”, which represents his “open letter” to the public concerned.

- Page Range:113-124
- No. of Pages:12
- Keywords:synaptic combinations; loanblends; prefixoids; composition; univerbation; language economy; Bulgarian
- Summary/Abstract:As one of the main word-formation methods in contemporary Bulgarian, the formation of synaptic combinations from both domestic and borrowed lexical material is characterized by high productivity (Murdarov 1983: 48). Many of the synaptic constructions registered in Dictionary of New Bulgarian Words 2010 and Dictionary of New Bulgarian Words 2021 have a shorter equivalent form, which is either a direct borrowing or a result of a different nominalization process. The aim of this study is to present a structural classification of recent synaptic combinations in contemporary Bulgarian and show how the principle of linguistic economy is manifested with some of these combinations.

- Subject(s):Language and Literature Studies, Theoretical Linguistics, Morphology
- Page Range:150-159
- No. of Pages:10
- Keywords:morpheme segmentation; morphemes; third conjugation verbs; aorist; imperfect
- Summary/Abstract:This study aims to present and substantiate morpheme segmentation models of third conjugation verbs. In order to implement this task, the morphemes indicating the grammatical meanings of the verbs belonging to the studied formal class should be described. This brings to the fore the question of the coincidence of the aorist and the imperfect morphemes. It’s no accident that some linguists note that this coincidence is an obstacle to “distinguishing the two grammatical meanings”, which “suggests that we must think of a new morphology for these verbs” (Kutsarov 2011: 145). On the other hand, the verb bases for the third conjugation are formed with the help of different morphemes (compare: gled-a, pat-uva, kaz-va). In view of this, an attempt has been made to classify the bases.

- Page Range:160-176
- No. of Pages:17
- Keywords:typological indices; evidentiality; indicative; conclusive; renarrative; dubitative; syntheticity; analyticity; composition; markedness of a paradigm member
- Summary/Abstract:The research article compares typological indices for estimating the degree of analyticity and syntheticity as well as the degree of composition and markedness of fourteen evidential micro paradigms in modern Bulgarian. The theoretical basis is rooted in G. Gerdzhikov's views on typological indices and laws (Gerdzhikov 1983, 1990, 1997, 2013). The research provides arguments that evidentiality as a grammatical category is not yet entirely grammaticalized. The close investigation of indices also confirms the hypothesis that in the presence of competing variants and a high degree of composition, a tendency for condensation of forms is being observed in some variants: reducing the degree of composition while achieving a relatively higher degree of synthesis.

- Author(s):Milena Vidralska
- Language:Bulgarian
- Subject(s):Language and Literature Studies, Theoretical Linguistics, Semantics
- Page Range:177-185
- No. of Pages:9
- Keywords:voice; transitivity; intransitivity; passivity; participles
- Summary/Abstract:The interaction between passivity and transitivity has long been a point of interest among linguists. The traditional view of the relationship between the two is based on the idea that participial passive forms are most commonly formed by transitive verbs. Nevertheless, spoken language demonstrates a different linguistic phenomenon. In recent years there has been a tendency for verbs to shift from the class of intransitive verbs to the class of transitive, leading to a reconsideration of the ability of the newly-coined verb forms to form the passive voice. This paper studies passive forms that are comprised of non-reflexive intransitive verbs with the verb “to be”.

- Author(s):Yovka Tisheva
- Language:Bulgarian
- Subject(s):Language and Literature Studies, Theoretical Linguistics, Semantics
- Page Range:186-197
- No. of Pages:12
- Keywords:psychological verbs; subject-experiencer verbs; stative predicates
- Summary/Abstract:The main goal of this article is to present observations on the syntactic structure of two of the verbs expressing positive feelings/emotional states: obicham (to love) and obozhavam (to adore). The valence frame of these verbs (also known as psychological verbs) comprises two arguments representing Experiencer and Theme (Object) of emotion. The possibilities for overt representation of thematic roles with two types of complements: noun phrases and subordinate clauses are analyzed. Obicham (to love) and obozhavam (to adore) belong to the subclass of stative predicates that allow for a stative reading only. In their argument structures that are analogous, the external argument represents Experiencer of emotion.

- Author(s):Marina Dzhonova
- Language:Bulgarian
- Subject(s):Language and Literature Studies, Theoretical Linguistics, Syntax, Semantics
- Page Range:211-220
- No. of Pages:10
- Keywords:predicates; stative constructions; argument structure; Bulgarian language
- Summary/Abstract:The paper examines the argument structure of constructions containing physiological-state predicative words in the contemporary Bulgarian language. The source material was extracted from the Bulgarian National Corpus and informal web communication. A comparison with corresponding stative verbs is made. The research reveals that the constructions under consideration include predicative adverbs (toplo, priyatno), predicative nouns (zhega) or predicative adjectives (gladen). Sentences containing explicit or implicit experiencer arguments are discussed along with the possibilities for expressing the stimulus and the locative argument as well as the constraints over complement sentences. The analysis of the empirical data leads to conclusions about the common argument structure of constructions with a predicative word denoting a physiological state.

- Keywords:history of Bulgarian stylistics; style; style features; text; tropes; stylistic figures
- Summary/Abstract:The article is dedicated to three textbooks in stylistics, published at the turn of the twentieth century, which marks the beginning of modern Bulgarian stylistics. The book of R. Puhlev contains a short theoretical part. The books of B. Angelov and V. Yordanov are impressively modern with regard to the included problems, as well as the used terms and their definitions. The two texts are juxtaposed and some of the theoretical accomplishments of the authors are highlighted. Both books have been written for didactic purposes, yet they are fundamental for the development of stylistics in Bulgaria.

- Page Range:235-246
- No. of Pages:12
- Keywords:conjunctives; subjunctive mood; conjunctive mood; da-constructions; Church-Slavonic; Russian; 18th century
- Summary/Abstract:The Conjunctions chtoby ‘so that, in order to’ and daby ‘so that, in order to’ arose almost simultaneously in Russian (the first, most likely, in Church Slavonic texts), moreover, in the period from the 15th to the 17th centuries there was no strict distinction between them, although there had already been a tendency for more frequent use of chtoby in administrative and everyday texts, and of daby in Church Slavonic texts. On the other hand, the data of modern languages (19th – 21st centuries), both Russian and Church Slavonic, indicate that at some point chtoby was finally ousted from the “synodal” Church Slavonic, and daby in Russian already was already perceived as a “bookish” and archaic conjunction. The author puts forward the thesis that the roots of the named functional and stylistic differentiation should be sought in the 18th century, the period when separate Church Slavonic and Russian literary languages were born.

- Keywords:parts of speech; classification criteria; morphological criterion; Al. Hr. Vostokov; V. Gr. Belinski; G. P. Pavski
- Summary/Abstract:The aim of the scientific research is to present and analyze the findings of three Russian linguists from the first half of the 19th century on a fundamental problem, related to the parts of speech. In the course of the study it was found that during this period in Russian philological science there was a purposeful research effort to update and modernize the „sacred“ hitherto eight-member division model of Aristarchus. The most valuable thing is that the three authors of grammars choose different taxonomic criteria, leading to different classifications according to the number and composition of the parts of speech.

- Page Range:256-264
- No. of Pages:9
- Keywords:predicative; infinitive construction; interpretation predicates
- Summary/Abstract:The paper considers constructions «predicative + infinitive». Interpretive infinitive constructions as opposed to emotional reactions. For emotional reactions, the predicative and the infinitive refer to the same subject, the infinitives of the perception, mental, speech verbs are typical for them: It hurts / It's sad to see you suffer (‘X sees, X is sad’). For interpretive constructions, the subject of the predicative and the subject of the infinitive does not coincide: It's tactless to ask this question – ‘X asks the question, Y evaluates such an act as tactless’. The infinitives of perceptual and mental verbs in such a construction are either not used, or they denote a kind of action: It is tactless to listen to private conversations.

- Keywords:adaptation of the verb borrowings from the Serbian and Croatian languages
- Summary/Abstract:Many borrowings from Latin, Greek, Turkish, German and English, and Romanic languages have been taken from the Serbian (SL) and Croatian (CL) languages. In the process of adaptation of the verb borrowings to the language system, the receiving language (both SL and CL) uses different suffixes: -ова/ти, -иса/ти, -ира/ти, without fixing the combination of the considered word-formation devices as a rule. Thanks to its phonetic background and easy articulation, an increase in the frequency of the suffix -ира/ти is established not only in CL, as before, but also in SL, because this word-formation element can stand after all vowels and after all consonants, while -ова/ти (the local traditional most frequent suffix) and -иса/ти (from Greek) appear in certain phonetic (and semantic) conditions. In verb borrowings, the suffix -ова/ти serves to denote the meaning ‘I am engaged in something, I represent what is expressed by the motivating word; I spend some time in a certain place, I stay“, while the suffix -иса/ти stands out with its particular presence in verbs, borrowed mostly from Greek and Turkish, meaning professions, crafts, titles and positions.

- No. of Pages:11
- Keywords:adverbial participles; Greek; Bulgarian; functional equivalents; translation
- Summary/Abstract:This paper focuses on the adverbial participles in the Greek language and their functional equivalents in Bulgarian translations. At the outset, we should clarify that adverbial participles exist in both languages and perform similar functions – they have adverbial use. However, there is a significant difference in the frequency of use of the participles in the two languages, and in particular – in the Greek language they are used much more widely than in the Bulgarian language. This necessitated a more in-depth study of the issue in order to establish the functional equivalents of the Greek adverbial participles in the Bulgarian language, using a translation corpus for this purpose.

- Summary/Abstract:The paper deals with a case study of the Bulgarian localization of the ferry ticket platform Ferryhopper, aiming to shed light on the current processes of localization in terms of technology and on the localization-specific issues translators and reviewers encounter as part of the website localization process from English into Bulgarian. The study covers some of the main technological factors affecting the linguists’ work in localization: the translation environment, the role of internationalization, and the navigation between the textual and the digital levels. The study further illustrates the resulting translation problems and the respective solutions adopted.

- Keywords:rationality; intuitiveness; synonyms; semantic features of the lexeme
- Summary/Abstract:The current linguistic research focuses on the analysis of linguistic facts in support of the hypothesis that people tend to believe that they think rationally and make rational decisions, and this tendency has its linguistic expression in lexical linguistic objects that they use for communicative purposes. In order to place emphasis on the “rational” in their way of thinking when communicating with others, native speakers “rely” more on lexical units grouped in a lexico-semantic field expressing rationality rather than on lexical units combined in a lexico-semantic field expressing intuitiveness. The paper also presents a linguistic model called the Triangle of Thought, which presents the synonymous relationships between selected lexemes that express co-referentiality. The presented component analysis of semantic synonyms of the Gedanke lexeme in the German-speaking semantic space supports the assumption that the German language is dominated by lexemes whose semantic features form the profile of “rationality”, in comparison with fewer lexical units whose semantic features characterize “intuitiveness”.

- Language:Bulgarian
- Subject(s):Language and Literature Studies, Foreign languages learning, Applied Linguistics, Computational linguistics
- Page Range:349-355
- No. of Pages:7
- Keywords:acoustic analysis; third vowel formant; foreign languages learning; pronunciation
- Summary/Abstract:Learning new and relatively complex articulation habits requires continuous practice. A positive effect is achieved when the subject has proper feedback on the outcome of his actions. This is the purpose of the TREFL program in the field of corrective phonetics. This software-provided method offers the possibility of practical modelling of vowels, taking into account frequency integrations in their mental acoustic image. In contrast to the classical two-formant vowel model, the new model gives a more realistic representation of vowels at the perceptual level.

- Summary/Abstract:The paper discusses the conceptions expressed in the1835 ‒ 1878 period, which relate to the meaning of direct evidence in Modern Bulgarian. It is argued that the terms definite tense: indefinite tense are polysemous. The text also comments on the first proposals for the existence of the -х-/-ш- ending defined as a marker of direct evidence by distinguished linguists such as A. Aleksandrov, I. Kutsarov, etc.

- Summary/Abstract:The article investigates the adverbial means of expression as a component of the functional-semantic field (abbreviated in the article as FSF) of locativity in contemporary Bulgarian and Russian. One of the ways to signal spatial relations is by using locative adverbs. In this study we take into consideration the symmetries and asymmetries in the system of locative adverbs in the two languages.
