- Summary/Abstract:Language competence is one of the most important factors affecting effective communication in business. In the companies of the modern business services sector (BPO and ITO) with a global reach, these are key competences. The city of Opole has become in recent years, among others, due to the availability of employees with a very good knowledge of the German language, the location of business projects directed to the German-speaking market by these companies. Cultural proximity and German language are the features that distinguish this location in the processes carried out under the so-called nearshoring. In this text the factors influencing this significant competence potential of Opole are presented. The economic and historical conditions that had and still have an influence on the high quality of the German language used here and the number of people who speak the language are discussed in it. The history of teaching this language in the Opolskie Voivodeship after World War II and the role of the German minority in maintaining the German identity, culture and language in the Opole Silesia are also outlined. Then, the companies from the BPO/ITO industry operating in Opole are presented, which use this language as well as their expectations regarding optimal competences and features of employees. Their collection can be used as an inspiration for shaping curriculum programs in the philological faculties in such a way as to enable combining these competencies with philological competences. Outlining the relationship between the “German language” as a feature that distinguishes the city of Opole on the map of the BPO/ITO business locations and the resulting thanks to it places of work is a summary of the reflections on the role of this language in the economic development of Opole.

- Summary/Abstract:Languages for specific purposes have become a popular research topic. The aim of this paper is to systematise and categorise the main directions of research on LSP at the Institute of Applied Linguistics at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. The paper focuses on two main fields of LSP research: translation and teaching. The article discusses not only the topics which are of interest to research staff but also the perspectives of the development of the field.

- Summary/Abstract:According to a report of the Association of Business Service Leaders in Poland, Łódź is one of the biggest BPO centres in Poland. Consequently, there is a increasing demand on the Łódź labour market for multilingual speakers and in particular for German speakers. This article includes the analysis of the project, which was conducend in 2017 at the University of Lódź in cooperation with a company from the same region. The aim of this paper is to present the role of the Germanist on the labour market.

- Summary/Abstract:The key aim of this article is to presents some exemplary LSP (languages for specific purpose) teaching techniques and exercises on the academic level. Firstly, the paper gives an overview of the challenges of the present-day job market situation and corporate environment on the market for modern business services in Poland and Łódź. Secondly, it presents examples of specialised languages teaching techniques, which are especially focused on the didactisation of authentic special texts in case study exercises.

- Summary/Abstract:In the article there are introduced several types of lingual equivalence and their relevance for the relations between source language and target language. Different types of equivalence, e.g. denotative, connotative, text-normative, pragmatic and formal equivalence, are demonstrated and analysed. There are also provided examples in various languages for each of the aforementioned equivalence types. Furthermore, the text contains the review and explication of selected methods used by translators to cover the lack of (appropriate) equivalents between two languages, like adaptation, paraphrase, using an expression with similar meaning, loan translation etc.

- Summary/Abstract:In this paper, the author attempts to describe and originate classes: project offered in the field of Linguistics for Business as part of second-cycle studies in german studies at the Faculty of Philology of the University of Lodz. The aim of these classes is a practical and conscious application and checking of the knowledge, skills and social competences acquired during the master’s studies. The project activities go beyond the purely theoretical area, showing participants the current needs of the business environment thanks to the cooperation with numerous external entities.

- Summary/Abstract:The author is interested in the subject of politics and history in textbooks for learning German as a foreign language. The presentation includes the results of an analysis aimed at checking among others the degree of universality of the above topics, grammatical tendencies, frequency of particular language skills and the way they are applied in German language textbooks available in Poland and dedicated to groups at different levels.
