- Summary/Abstract:The article presents the process of translation of a guidebook, which is basically a popular science text about archaeology. The process of translation itself is an example of collaborative translation produced by translators as well as a terminology expert and a language editor. The article emphasises the significance of specialised knowledge and terminology and the role of experts in the production of the target text. This experience can be shared with students as part of a translation course.

- Summary/Abstract:The training of German teachers at Polish universities is no longer as self-evident as it was in the 1990s – ever fewer students are taking courses in German as a Foreign Language. There are many reasons for this trend: on the one hand the hegemony of English as a global language, the decline in the demand for teachers of German and the corresponding demographic low; on the other, the miserable pay conditions for Polish teachers and comparatively high salaries in the business sector. It is therefore not surprising that an increasing number of university students of German wish to develop careers as specialists in various economic sectors. This is especially the case as the demand for employees with a knowledge of German is currently particularly high. This raises the question of what the employment market means in concrete terms for degree programmes in German at Polish Universities. Should prevailing market conditions be seen as an opportunity to reorientate a subject that is currently attempting to protect established disciplinary norms or do they rather constitute a challenge, for example to (still) traditionally socialised university lecturers employed in arts and humanities disciplines? This paper will explore these questions.

- Summary/Abstract:The article discusses mediostructures in bilingual Polish-German and German- -Polish LSP dictionaries. The first part presents the structure of dictionary references and two types of mediostructures, namely, internal and external, which stems from the intertextuality of the dictionary. Then, on the example of selected entry articles, means functioning as the internal and the external mediostructure were examined, i.e. graphic symbols, abbreviations and references to sources in two bilingual dictionaries. The study shows that the presented dictionaries have different reference systems and thus offer the user unequal information on the level of other structures of the dictionary, that is, the micro- and the macrostructure.

- Summary/Abstract:In Austria, roughly one third of juveniles between the ages of 15 and 20 attend a vocational school. Many of these vocational students face difficulties in reading and understanding the specialist texts that are used in vocational training, irrespective of whether they have migration background or not. They often lack the skills to understand specialist language, which forms part of the education language and is defined by multiple word combinations, complex attributes and separable verbs, and often lack skills in decoding specialist texts. One way to acquire the skills in specialist language as well as the requisite decoding skills is to offer language-aware and instructional scaffolds, which means planning (subject) lessons in which the “deliberate use of language in teaching and learning (in a special professional subject)” is practiced throughout the entirety of the educational curriculum. The main question is the extent to which language-aware teaching across the vocational curriculum (including both general knowledge and specialized, commercial subjects) as well as methods like scaffolding actually helps vocational students improve their comprehension skills despite the difficult structural conditions within the vocational system (time constraints, heterogeneity, etc.).

- Summary/Abstract:This paper aims to presents some exemplary LSP (languages for specific purpose) teaching techniques on the university level in order to meet the challenges of the present-day job market situation and corporate environment. First, the article provides an overview of the current situation and demands for candidates with foreign languages skills on the market for modern business services in Poland and the local job market of Łódź. - Summary/Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to describe the problem of interference (linguistic calques) in the translation of legal texts. First section of the paper contains introduction to problematic aspects of this type of translation and includes small review of the most important issues that are making work with legal texts particularly complicated. Moreover, the phenomenon of the interference is being defined and described in the theoretical part of the paper. Next part contains analysis of mistakes that appear in legal texts translated by students of German philology. Special attention is paid to word-formation calques, syntactic calques and lexical calques, which arise in texts translated from Polish into German and in opposite direction.

- Summary/Abstract:The necessity for translation of school reports to foreign languages mostly stems from globalization and virtually endless possibilities of transfering to educational institutions in the majority of EU countries. In the hiring process, foreign employers, schools and higher education institutions require the candidate to provide translations of school reports confirming obtained education and qualifications, prepared by a sworn, certified translator. In view of the above, this article is focused on a discussion about the specific character of certified translations and education as well as status of certified translators in Poland. The article also presents substantive and formal rules for preparation of certified translations. Further, the article focuses on the issue of Polish school report translations to German.

- Summary/Abstract:The present paper is an attempt to discuss the issue of terminological consistency in specialized texts as well as the methods of its maintaining and verification throughout the process of translation with the aid of CAT tools. From the one hand, the terminological consistency is one of key features of acceptable translation of specialized texts, from the other hand, the terminological inconsistency is a common problem of the translation industry, especially as far as extensive and short-term translation projects are concerned.

- Summary/Abstract:This paper deals with the recent activities of Slovak research institutions and state authorities in terms of terminology teaching and research, as well as terminology work in the Slovak business environment. Based on the results of a survey and the real demands focused on terminology in theory and practice today, the example of the work with terminology database TRANSTERM demonstrates how in university education the terminology teaching and the terminology work is provided for would-be translators and interpreters.
