- Summary/Abstract:Michael Ondaatje is recognized in Poland mainly as a novelist and the author of The English Patient; his poetic works are, therefore, hardly known to the Polish reader. Ondaatje is one of these poets whose writing is shaped by the biographical experience – his poems often allude to the past and present an imaginative re-creation of memory and time. One of the most famous and beautiful of Ondaatje’s poems, The Cinnamon Peeler from Running in the Family (1984), is deeply immersed in Sri Lankan (or Cingalese) intensity of sensations and feelings. The article aims to present and analyse the four Polish translations of this poem and critically compare the translation strategies adopted by its translators – Jerzy Jarniewicz (Zbieracz cynamonu, Literatura na świecie 1998/4-5; Zbieracz cynamonu. Poezje wybrane, Kraków 2016), Krystyna Lenkowska (Obieracz cynamonu. Fraza 2001/3), Justyna Drobnik and Zofia Małkowiak (Korowacz cynamonu and Cynamonowy pan, the Internet website). The translators take up a difficult translation challenge since Ondaatje’s poem is not only highly musical and imaginative, but also immersed in language and culture that are “exotic” in the Polish cultural context and, consequently, open to manifold postcolonial interpretations.

- Summary/Abstract:The interests and ambitions of this paper fall within the broadly understood domain of reception of English literature in Poland. The article itself engages with four contemporary novels, Drood by Dane Simmons, Wanting by Richard Flanagan, Girl in a Blue Dress by Gaynor Arnold, and The Invisible Woman by Claire Tomalin, all of which derive their inspiration from the work of Charles Dickens. The paper attempts to find parallels and affinities between the four novels and account for their enormous popularity with Polish publishers as well as readers of fiction. The second part of the article focuses on the translation of Dan Simmons’s Drood into Polish, in particular the vividly visual and evocatively sensual descriptions of the seedy underworld of Victorian London.

- Summary/Abstract:The article is an attempt to confront the ways in which Siri Hustvedt’s works have been received in Polish literary circulation. Although all of Hustvedt’s novels have been translated into Polish and published in recognizable publishing houses, only the last one, The Blazing World, nominated to The Man Booker Prize (economy of prestige is still strong) was picked up by mainstream literary criticism. The novel’s title is, of course, borrowed from a legendary book by Margaret Cavendish as Hustvedt explores the tradition built by female writers. Still, above all, Husvedt is treated as if she has never published anything else, not a piece of fiction nor science or poetry. Also, she was more often presented mainly as “the wife” (back in the day there was a rumor about “the real” author of Blindfold and her other works – supposedly Paul Auster) than an independent artist. On the one hand, therefore, there was an absence of recognition of the author and her role, on the other hand, her presence was neither full, nor accurate and built on the economy of prestige (nomination to the important award) and patriarchal pattern (she was visible only as an extension of the famous husband). Siri Hustvedt is conscious of the situation and her ability to process it and make into an artwork is perhaps one of the best such examples in contemporary literature. She is able of making not only such statements, but also asking stimulating and even provocative questions about art, work, autobiography, cultural roles and a long and fragile process of emancipation.

- Summary/Abstract:The article is an attempt to cover the Polish reception of literary oeuvre by Sylvia Plath. Translations, especially translations of her poetry, are in the centre, however due to the fact that the biographical myth of Plath lives on also in Poland, The Bell Jar, her short stories, diary and letters are also mentioned. Polish translations of all these texts, including volumes of Plath’s poetry, met with lively response among critics and readers. The most intriguing record of this response is a substantial number of Polish poems inspired by poetry and biography of Sylvia Plath; some of them are discussed in the text.

- Summary/Abstract:The article discusses mainly Brief Interviews with Hideous Men by David Foster Wallace. The author analyses the text by making references to other texts by Wallace but also to Polish literature. Kącka is interested in finding a peculiar context of common artistic sensibilities and a similar vision of the world, which is why she traces points of convergence, of existential and interpretative analogies between David Foster Wallace’s and Ireneusz Iredyński’s immanent poetics. One of the main aesthetic categories discussed by Kącka are provocation (including literary provocation) and disgust. In her opinion, the category of disgust is precisely the element which connects these two authors.

- Summary/Abstract:Abstract: The aim of the article is to employ the category of treason, which is relatively seldom used in literary studies, in discussing Czesław Miłosz’s approach to the work of two very different poets, namely Philip Larkin and Robinson Jeffers. The charges of treason were brought against Larkin by Miłosz in his angry rejection of the Englishman’s poetry, which he saw as a betrayal of human values. My intention is to show that Miłosz’s reading of Larkin’s work is highly subjective and patently biased. The most egregious examples of his prejudice against Larkin is a short poem “Against the Poetry of Philip Larkin”, which is little more than a hurried dismissal of his work and worldview. My ambition is to try to redress the balance by identifying and exposing the prejudices and hostilities which shape Miłosz’s interpretation of Larkin’s poetry. While the poet from Hull never fails to be censured by Miłosz for his alleged misanthropy, the majestic verse of Jeffers’s identification with nature meets with far more understanding and appreciation, though – as I try to prove in this essay – the American poet’s was really a poetry of treason and defection to the enemy. I contend that Jeffers betrayed humanity by willful desertion of human vantage point and observing the baffling follies of mankind from the perspective of inhuman nature.

- Summary/Abstract:The article discusses the latest Polish translations of verses by Rudyard Kipling and their relations with current literary, cultural and ideological discourses in Poland. Retrospective recapitulation of the manners the poetry of British Nobel Prize Laureate was interpreted and analyzed throughout its history clearly suggests at least one common pattern in critical and translational perception of Kipling’s texts. After the years at the turn of 19th and 20th Centuries, when his poetry had been marginalized by Polish publishers as supporting colonial politics of European empires, his poetical works – for the same reason – were often translated and eagerly printed during the interwar period. Ostracism for his “imperialistic” agenda after the Second World War in the communist state of People’s Republic of Poland only slightly changed after the political turn in 1989, since the translations of Kipling’s writings remained sparse and occasional due to the popularity of postcolonial studies among Polish readers and critics. Numerous of the latest translations also link Kipling’s poetry to Polish social and political context – often as a result of arbitrary changes introduced by the translators in the target texts.

- Summary/Abstract:The essay offers a critical analysis of various tensions and tendencies in the Polish reception of the poetry of Adrienne Rich. In Poland, Rich is known chiefly as a feminist rather than a Marxist writer, and the focus remains on her very early identity-focused poems from the 1970s. From the 90s onwards, Rich has famously distanced herself from her early work, advocating instead for a more radical, universalist and anticapitalist approach to the poetic form. The fact that this shift is almost completely absent from her Polish reception can be seen as a result of a long-term process of political appropriation - those responsible for promoting Rich's work are interested in weaponising her for the purposes of an identity-driven movement. Thus Polish readers get access to a picture that's as incomplete as it is misleading; and yet on the other hand, this also allows us some insight into the political and ideological reasons behind the work of translators, critics and activists responsible for introducing Rich to the Polish audience.

- Summary/Abstract:The essay compares and contrasts two main tendencies in the contemporary Polish reception of the work of Ezra Pound. On the one hand, Pound is a popular writer in the Polish far-right circles, where his poetry plays decidedly second fiddle to the more overt racist and fascist undertones of his political and economic writings. On the other hand, there’s a largely depoliticised way of reading Pound that’s been promoted mainly by the academic writers and journalists who attempt to draw a clear line between Pound's literary brilliance and his unacceptable political views. With the notable exception of Andrzej Sosnowski’s essays, virtually all contemporary interpretations of Pound's work are thus guilty of an ideologically motivated simplification. The author's goal is to sketch out a possibility of a new progressive reading of Pound’s work – one where the most significant tension is to be found not between the poetic and the political elements of his writings, but within a larger drive towards material security as a guarantee of personal freedom.
