At the same time, this period includes a process in which the association between international migration, threat and security becomes clear and migration has been politicized and securitized by its reflection on the policies implemented. Actually, when evaluated in general, it is seen that immigrants, who were regarded as necessary and efficient and encouraged by European states from after the Second World War until the 1974 Oil Crisis, and later on started to be regarded as undesirable people and even threats in Europe.

- Summary/Abstract:European integration, in general, and the development of the Schengen regime, in particular, have transformed the nature of national borders, their role and function, as well as meanings and perceptions regarding them.Rather than the traditionalists’ definition of borders as fixed lines separating states’ territories, critical border scholars theorize them by dwelling on their (re)construction, re-spatialization and re-allocation as dispersed, deterritorialized and mobile.2 Another significant point critics elaborate on is how the bordering process creates an Other that always changes depending on “who they are, where they are coming from and going to”.

- Summary/Abstract:Securitization is a complex set of processes in which political and social relations are evaluated within the framework of security. In this context, the issue of migration has become one of the most important areas where securitization is applied today. By the end of the Cold War, migration and security phenomena has started to be associated with each other and has gained new dimensions in the meantime. In this process, many different concepts, including social security, internal security, and human security, are on the agenda. The issue of migration ranks high on the national and international agenda, which are within the scope of quite different views and goals. Therefore, at the intersection of policy objectives and public interests in two important areas, various consequences for states and individuals (immigrants and citizens) emerge.

- Summary/Abstract:What makes the EU different from other actors is its use of a catalogue of values and principles that are shaped, shared, and diffused by Europe around the world. By expanding these values beyond Europe, the EU constitutes its self-identification and reflects a particular kind of actorness in international affairs. These performances have ontologically been designated within specific role conceptualizations, such as a ‘civilian power’1, ‘structural power’2, ‘normative area’3, and ‘normative power’.4 Among these scholars, Ian Manners, in most of his works5, coins the concept of Normative Power Europe (NPE) and describes the EU as a norm promoter that conditions universal norms to third countries in order to consolidate the moral consciousness in international politics. Although this approach of Manners was ground-breaking approximatively two decades ago, the EU has yet continued to include universal values as criteria in its external relations or in its constitutive documents and makes the scholars to elaborate the NPE role conception through case studies. However, the EU’s stance on refugee crisis manifests itself with noncompliant practices that cause myriad political challenges; such as the rise of nationalist parties in member states’ parliaments, breaking of the Dublin Regime, the lack of coordination between nation states and failure in the common protection policies for refugees, all of which undermine the NPE image and unravel the fact that the EU pulls between human right norm promoter and security dichotomy.

- Summary/Abstract:The international community, and particularly wealthy nations, fail to share the responsibility to protect people fleeing their homes in search of safety. In other words, they cannot agree and support a fair and predictable system to protect people who are forced to leave everything behind because of violence and persecution. The European Commission has designed a quota system to distribute refugees among member states, using criteria such as population size, GDP, unemployment rates and the number of asylum applications received in the past. The mandatory quota proposal has strained relations between Western, Eastern and Central European member states. This was due to some countries bearing a disproportionate burden. Western European states, such as Germany, accept large numbers of refugees while Eastern European states are reluctant to share the burden.

- Summary/Abstract:It is generally argued that not all members of the society are being treated equally in the UK because some people face various barriers in accessing vital public services and lack opportunities. Although there are many people having such disadvantages, some migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers are being left further behind because they face certain barriers, and they do not benefit from equal opportunities in the society. This study has focused on the experience of Turkish Immigrants, who are a diverse group whose members have experienced a range of problems and inequalities due to their immigration status and complex and tough immigration policies, over the last five decades. However, not much is known about Turkish immigrants and their immigration patterns1, and thus equally little is known about their integration into the British society and their contribution to social, economic and political life.

- Summary/Abstract:In a general sense the former Yugoslavia, including Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina (BiH), Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro and Slovenia, has been regarded as a country of emigration in terms of internal and external migration. In the late 1970s, Slovenia was exposed to guest-workers coming from southern Yugoslavia. The reason of such internal migration was both the opportunity for ex-Yugoslavian people to find a job in industrial cities of Slovenia and the economy of Slovenia being better than other ex-Yugoslavian states.2 When the civil war broke up in Yugoslavia in the 1990s, the world witnessed the forced displacements of Yugoslav citizens and the Western European countries were suddenly subjected to the wave of refugees. Therefore, it could be inferred that ethno-national conflict or deep economic crisis led to waves of migration and refugees.
