This article combines bibliographic information taken from Ioan Străchinaru’s work with the confessions of those who personally met him, myself included.

Translating Slang from À la Recherche du Temps Perdu

La traduction de l’argot dans À la recherche du temps perdu

The article is part of a thesis aiming at identifying the way and the extent to which the idiolect in the great Proustian novel was remarked and rendered by the Romanian translators that achieved the admirable feat of translating the whole novel, Radu (Eugenia) Cioculescu and Irina Mavrodin. Along with Françoise and the duke of Guermantes, Albertine Simonet represents a language symbol and a social figure: for the former, she evolves from slang/cockney specific to the young girls group to the joli langage inherited from her aunt and borrowed from her lover; for the latter, she rises from the small bourgeoisie to the grand one, in order to deserve the company of the narrator. As dictionaries vary in including certain words among slang/jargon or colloquial language, and as this register is less representative in Romanian, we appreciate that this idiolectal specificity remains largely invisible in the Romanian translations.

Since the translator translates not words, but texts (Catford, 1965; Nord, 1991), any analysis of translations takes into account the question of equivalence, which forms the basis of the relationship between the source and the target text. After a careful reading of the works dedicated to the study of the text in translation studies, we propose an analysis that takes advantage of integrating theoretical approaches. The evaluation criteria applied to the Romanian versions of Victor Hugo's Les Misérables concern several levels (lexicology, syntax, pragmatics, stylistics, etc.), because our objective is to identify, in a multidisciplinary perspective, the relationships between the text source and target text and the degree of achievement of equivalence in translation.

Based on anthropometric data from humans, I designed and made a rehabilitation system adjustable on the arm and forearm, using an intelligent shape-memory alloy for flexion and a superelastic experimental alloy for extension.

The teaching methods in the engineering academic environment (UTI Iaşi) have been feebly updated in the last 20 years. There are methods that could improve the teaching-learning in higher technical education, in order to reach performance and professionalism. This article presents a few inductive methods of teaching and learning, resources for the professors who want to make a change in this sense and offers a few suggestions to transform the classical lecture into an interactive one. The use of the methods presented increases the professors’ satisfaction in the didactic activity and the students’ performance.

The present article proposes a semantic and lexical analysis of a series of French words referring to the divine motherhood of Virgin Mary, the one who has given birth to the Son of God. Our analysis addresses a wide range of nouns, verbs, adjectives and phrases belonging to the specialized field of Christian religious terminology (and specifically the Orthodox subfield), such as: sein (n.m.) [breast], Théotokos (nom propre) [Theotokos], enfantement (n.m.) [begetting] – enfanter (v.tr.) [beget], maternité divine et virginité de la Mère de Dieu [the divine motherhood and virginity of Virgin Mary], couvrir de l’ombre du Saint-Esprit [abide in the shadow of the Holy Ghost], conception virginale [virginal conception], entrailles (n.m. au pluriel) [womb], irréprochable vs. immaculée (adj.) [blameless versus immaculate], etc., based on their discursive and poetic usage, within a corpus consisting in several liturgical texts of French Orthodoxy.

This novel was rewarded with a Goncourt in 2005 – the same year it appeared at Grasset. A mother near the end of her physical strength (she falls in the garden and stays there for two days, rethinking her past life from afar) and a son, over 60 years old, who comes to live again at home, in order to regain his moral strength, lost along the way. This reciprocal examination leads the son to the ardently desired novel and the mother to a rebalance of the forces in relation to her son, a role she assumes with grace and wisdom. “I didn’t give you an end to your book, but I gave you a fall”, says the mother. A symbolic fall from maternal paradise to the (promised) land of literary glory.

We approach the study of students' vocational interests as a determinant of the performance in academic activity and the essential premise of personal career strategy, insertion and professional integration at graduation. We treat vocational interests as manifestations of personality, as educated dimensions, expressions of the person's preferences for certain types of activities, for example innovative/conventional, theoretical/practical, individual/team, and certain professional development environments, as would be industrial/ laboratory, in nature/in built space, in institutional space/at the employee's option, etc. The integration of these two variables, the type in question, the environment of the professional activity preferred by the person outlines ten general occupational themes. In this paper, we aim to know the vocational requirements of different occupations in the field of environmental engineering through the perspective of practitioners, specialists working in the respective fields on concrete functions in order to determine the Practical Models of Vocational Requirements.

The paper highlights the paradigms and results of recent research demonstrating the role of teacher creativity in fostering active learning in students. The first chapter highlights the need to use active and stimulating teaching methods to develop skills required for professional and social standards at European level, such as the ability to learn how to learn and the ability to manage the tension between innovation and continuity. Interactive teaching develops critical thinking skills and creative thinking that will generate self-management skills for the individual's life. The second chapter defines creativity, facilitators and inhibitors of creativity, creative didactic styles. Research that shows the role of teacher's creativity in developing active learning skills in students is presented. The paper also emphasizes the importance of active learning in the development of social competencies necessary for young people: empathy, assertiveness, problem solving, prosocial and civic behavior.

The purpose of the article is to define the self-management of learning in the multimedia knowledge society and to draw its profile, using clearly specified criteria, for the students in technical faculties also enrolled in the program for pedagogical training.The self-management of learning is similar, but not identical to the notion of self-directed learning (Siebert, 2001), self-regulated learning (Zimmerrman, 1989; Negovan, 2009), learning self-determination (Frăsineanu, 2010), self-education (Barna, 1995), self-training (Dordea, 2006), independent learning (Neacşu, 2000).The self-management concept is defined and described by the actions of anticipation, planning, design, organisation, management, assessment and self-counselling of learning. We develop and present a pyramidal model of self-managerial competences for learning, from the bottom to the top in the following manner: cognitive competencies, metacognitive competencies, motivational competencies, management competencies. This model consists of three synthetic dimensions of self-managerial competencies: learning self-knowledge, self-motivation for learning, learning self-assessment.

The history of higher technical education in Romania begins in the second decade of the 19th century, with the creation of schools of land surveyors in Iaşi and Bucharest. The capital of Moldavia opened the way for this type of education and was one of the major centres of the Romanian academic life. The establishment of the third polytechnic school in 1937 crowned the efforts of academics and specialists in this region to establish a higher education institution that could prepare solely engineers for the Romanian industry. The beginning and the early years did not stand under favourable conditions. The institution was first exiled to Chernivtsi and then to Turnu-Severin, which would jeopardize the future of the engineering school of Iaşi. The present study is an investigation of the past of the institution and an attempt to revive a part of its history, focusing on the situation of the School in the 1940’s-1950's – a world that was unsettled in many ways.

Mentorship is a form of individual learning that contributes to the institutional development as well. From this perspective, the organization of the activity needs support from the management of the institution. Organizing activity means planning in accordance with a set of objectives: the novice teacher’s personal objectives, the mentor's professional objectives and the institutional objectives (referring to the human resource from school and the expected results). Frequently, novice teachers consider the first year of activity as being demanding and stressful. We can have more perspectives for analysis. Does the institutional context provide no support for newcomers? Is the support provided unofficially, at collegial or structural level in an official, well-structured program and in accordance with the institution's needs regarding the development of human resources? Do the novice teachers show willingness to ask for or to receive support? We believe that the ability of the novice teachers to cope with the professional demands must be considered as a priority at the level of school management board. When the mentorship program is supervised by the school management board, the novice teachers will consider the work environment as a positive learning experience; they will be more motivated to do things well; they will receive permanent feedback from the mentor.

We describe the self-management of learning in underachievers and high-achievers (Negovan, 2009) to identify the criteria for a good self-management of learning: 1. efficient time management; 2. establishing their own specific and immediate goals; 3. more frequent monitorization 4. higher satisfaction standards; 5. long-standing persistence of goals; 6. intrinsic motivation; 7. performance control; 8. environment structuring and selection; 9. seeking help. The presence of these criteria in their entirety (9) in the students' responses confirms a good self-management of learning in the students of the research sample, and their total absence or the partial presence of a number of criteria identifies managerial difficulties in students, for one of the three sub-components of management. This is also the research hypothesis. To test this hypothesis, we developed a questionnaire consisting of 30 questions divided in three sub-components: learning self-knowledge, self-motivation for learning, learning self-assessment. Based on the results, we developed a profile of the self-management of learning in the students in the sample selected. We found that all nine criteria are met by the students, but with two observations to each component. These observations and their interpretation can be found in the conclusions of this article.

Willingness to Communicate (WTC) has been the focus of a number of studies in recent years. The construct of WTC is seen as a combination of trait and state (situational) variables. This paper reports on a preliminary investigation into the effect of social proximity on the communicative interaction of a learner with low WTC interacting with learners of varying levels of WTC and varying degrees of social proximity. The learners’ output was quantified by word count and turn-taking. Recordings of interaction were analysed and a post-activity interview conducted to provide additional insights into the learners’ situational WTC. Results suggest that for learners with low WTC, social proximity is an important variable in situational WTC. Further research is needed to address the limitations of the study.

Three of Wilde’s comedies – Lady Windermere’s Fan, A Woman of No Importance and The Importance of Being Earnest present mother figures that explore and exploit gender and melodramatic convention stereotypes. Apparently, the feminine characters seem to conform to conventional stereotypes: thus, Mrs Erlynne (Lady Windermere’s Fan) seems the perfect embodiment of the ‘woman with a past’ and of the unmotherly mother; Mrs. Arbuthnot (A Woman with No Importance) on the other hand, appears to be the prototype of the sacrificial mother; Lady Bracknell (The Importance of Being Earnest) can be seen as the symbol of the guardian parent, with roots in Roman comedies. A more attentive reading of the plays, however, will reveal meanings that tend to undermine the labels we are tempted to attach too fast, thus offering Wilde’s plays and his dramatis personae multiple, sometimes contradictory interpretations.

Idiomatic expressions carry metaphorical meaning, which is achieved by means of stylistic and semantic instruments such as symbols and concepts, that are functionally subordinated to the metaphor. This paper emphasizes the difference between the three notions and illustrates the relationship between them, using idiomatic expressions from different languages as examples. The selected expressions are centered on three entities that acquire figurative value – honey, fire and sand, which are analyzed from a comparative point of view, for the purpose of distinguishing symbolic load and conceptual meaning. Another focus is on achieving a multilingual perspective on the realization and perception of metaphorical meaning in idioms.

The novel Wuthering Heights, regarded as a masterpiece of English literature was published in 1847. The literary reviewers of the time had an ambivalent attitude toward this novel that departed from contemporary standards and baffled criticism through its enigmatic structure and its display of primal passion, violence, cruelty and unorthodox view on life. The same novel still continues to baffle even today attempts to decipher its true meaning, simply because it is an open, multi-faceted text, which cannot be placed in the straightjacket of a single valid interpretation. This article explores the inner and outer spaces in the novel Wuthering Heights, with a view to showing how they relate to different characters in the novel. The first sections will focus on the more or less enclosed spaced delimited by the neighbouring manors of Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange, as well as on the vastness of the moors, while the last part will deal with the elements that act as meeting points or interfaces between various inner and outer spaces.

The computer numerical control (CNC) machining market has increased exponentially during the last decades and the prognosis is still among the most optimistic in the industry. The high demand for software-assisted manufacturing has led to an explosion in the number of companies that specialize in the manufacturing, sale and service of numeric control machines. This creates tremendous job opportunities, either for fresh graduates who are looking for a career in the field or for more experienced professionals who would like to take their position to the next level. However, the prerequisite for having access to all these benefits is a solid, if not proficient use of English. The goal of this article is, therefore, to cast some light on the basic terminology of CNC machining and on some challenges that are inherent in a domain that covers so many countries and cultures.
