In this paper we choose to talk about two remarkable figures in the academic theology of Cluj. The martyr priest Liviu Galaction Munteanu and the priest Ioan Bunea, belonged to anti-communist resistance, contending this way their love for Faith and nation. The unavoidable conviction and their written presence in the Security’s files challenges us to analyse the way the two defendants, were convicted just because they brought offenses to the Totalitarian System by their tenacity to claim an intense pastoral-missionary activity.

2016 was dedicated by the Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church to the education of the young people. In this frame, one may find important to focus on some young characters that, by their endeavour, can indicate a missionary methodology among this segment of people, in particular, one from the western Church, Pier Giorgio Frassati, and another one from the Eastern Church, Valeriu Gafencu, both of them important names in the missionary realm of the last century. This paper aims to focus on two moments – a missionary bio-bibliography of the two characters and the identification of alist of constants as reflected in their missionary activity. Finally, one is interested to identify some general indicators for the missionary activity among contemporary young generation.

In the present study, the author highlights the personality of the Romanian hierarch Nicodim Munteanu (1864-1948). During his life he went through all the hierarchical steps of our Church: auxiliary bishop, bishop, metropolitan and patriarch of Romania. Pilgrims at Saint Paraskeva by Viorel Munteanu This text is an analysis of a musical composition signed by Viorel Munteanu and entitled “Calls to Salvation. Pilgrims at Saint Paraskeva“. One of the composers for whom the combination of faith and artistic creed, of theology and musical art has manifested naturally, in various musical genres is Viorel Munteanu, an outstanding personality of Romanian music and a beloved professor in Iasi who enjoyed a well-deserved recognition in the Romanian and European artistic environments. The distinguished musician composed the Oratory Calls to Salvation. Pilgrims at Saint Paraskeva for singers, reciter, chorus, Byzantine choir, children’s choir and orchestra inspired by the Byzantine monody, presented in first absolute audition on October 16, 2017, on the stage of National Theater Vasile Alecsandri in Iasi. The work of the distinguished musician Viorel Munteanu will remain a model of artistic creation inspired by the local psaltic tradition and which reflects the Romanian spirituality in full.

The book Memories of the Apterous Peregrine is not only a unique literary work, but also a moving document of life. It is the story that could not be arrested. It has an unusual history and matrix space. It was conceived under the ground, a few meters below the grass, in the prisons of Jilava and Aiud, in the “academy” of the forty intellectuals with heavy sentences. The paper proposes to analyse the activity of Bartolomeu Anania in the context of the Aiud re-education, an episode that created controversy in the memorialistic literature of the Romanian Gulag. The paper will exclusively use documents from the Securitate archives, excerpts from the files of Bartolomeu Anania, of other prisoners, as well as files belonging to the Aiud Operative Group. The role of the article is to provide researchers and the public with new documentary sources that help understand the topic of the Aiud re-education. Regarding the activity of Bartolomeu Anania in the re-education, as shown by the Securitate documents, we notice the marginal role he had, limited to the public reading of the “self-unmasking” declarations, in the imposed pattern of the re-education clubs’ meetings; also noticeable are Anania’s discussions with Ilie Niculescu regarding the tense relationship between Christianity and the legionary movement and, towards the end of re-education, his minimal contribution (a four-page material on Corneliu Codreanu) to the “Book of the Re-education”.

The year 1939 represented one of the most important temporal landmarks in the history of Romania and the Romanian Orthodox Church. After two decades of peace and economic, cultural and religious development, Romania was in the eve of other dramatic changes. The constitutional monarchy, to which both the accomplishment of the Great Union and the international prestige of the country were related, was replaced by a royal dictatorship. The Romanian Orthodox Church had a new leader, as Patriarch Nicodim Munteanu took over after Patriarch Miron Cristea had led the institution for 20 years. The new patriarch’s mission was not easy, as it was unfolding in parallel with a series of important and sometimes dramatic events: the beginning of World War II, King Carol II’s abdication, King Michael I’s ascension to the throne, the establishment of the legionary regime and marshal Ion Antonescu’s dictatorship, the events of the 23rd of August 1944, the Soviet occupation, and the gradual establishment of the communist regime. The Romanian post-conflict reality proved that returning to the situation of the interwar period was a utopia, both for the Monarchy and the Church. The Communist Party would not make any concessions in the process of seizure of power. After eliminating its political adversaries, the Royal House and the Church were the only two institutions left of “old” Romania. Between 1945 and 1948, both were subjected to unbelievable pressure, and Patriarch Nicodim Munteanu and King Michael were increasingly on their own. Being aware that they had to work together in order to curb the communists’ actions, the two became very close and supported each other. It was the last lambency of the Byzantine symphony, the end of a symbiotic relationship that had lasted for more than 600 years. When King Michael I was forced to abdicate on the 30th of December 1947, Patriarch Nicodim Munteanu understood it was time for him to leave as well. The old patriarch lived for another two months, 58 days, in a country that had become a People’s Republic.

The life of the spiritual and literary man Bartolomeu Valeriu Anania is under the sign of the symbolic dialogue between Bart and Val, suggested in „Cerurile Oltului (The Heavens of the Olt)”, of the perpetual interior colloquium between faith and culture, of the fertile conjugation between the Bible of the Church and the library of culture. In retrospect, we discover that the Annunciation has become his emblem holiday. First of all, he was baptized in his native church on the feast of the Annunciation. Also, on the same day of the Annunciation, in 1936, he entered the brotherhoods of the cross, he was initiated in the greenish adolescence and thrown into the tumult of the history of a restless century, with painful consequences that will follow him for a lifetime through trials and imprisonment. 70 years after his adolescent initiation, after becoming almost a myth, a quasilegendary figure, on March 25, 2006, he was enthroned Metropolitan of Cluj by Patriarch Teoctist, the Annunciation thus becoming the patronal feast of the new metropolia. This wondrous sign of the Annunciation and this generic model of „So be it!” seem to have always guided from above the man Bartolomeu Valeriu Anania throughout his entire life.

In everything he undertook, as a writer (poet, dramatic poet, prose writer, essayist, memorialist, publicist), but also as a hierarch (shepherd, preacher, administrator, author of religious works), Bartolomeu Valeriu Anania distinguished himself as an imposing personality by dignity, fairness and verticality, beneficial and modeling in society, a personality able, through the Christian, civic and patriotic attitude, to temporarily overshadow his work. He had a sinuous biography, with many dangerous trials, carrying his own cross with falls and rises. In the concrete context of personal biographical becoming, as well as in the contrasting political context of successive regimes (Carlist, Antonescu’s, Communist, post-December), he manifested himself at the same time as a Man of the Church (he entered monachism at the age of 20 and he became, in the end, a hierarch), Man of Letters (with an early debut, at the age of 14, and later with a complex work, of “complete” author) and Man of History a miles Christi for the Church and nation).

The year 2021 marks one hundred years since the birth of Metropolitan Bartolomeu Anania, of Cluj, Maramureş and Sătmar. On the occasion of this event, we proposed an interdisciplinary cultural route in the following communities: the Transylvanian villages Reciu-Gârbova and Boz-Doştat from Alba county for the identification of the paternal family and the villages of Glăvile and Amărăşti from Vâlcea for the maternal family. The documentation will take place over five days, totaling a route of over 1400 km. The motivation of the research starts from the fact that in the marriage certificate of his parents, Vasile Anania with Ana Mărgăritescu, his father is registered as being born in Reciu village “from the Austro-Hungarian land of Transylvania”, while Metropolitan Bartolomeu Anania declared in the show “The professionals”, made by Eugenia Vodă on TVR 1 Romania, that his Transylvanian origin is in Boz village, Doştat commune. Both villages are located on either side of the road Sebeş - Sibiu. Then, the research will continue in the villages of Amărăşti and Glăvile in Vâlcea County, to complete the biography on the maternal line. The research expedition will also be a cultural pilgrimage, having meetings with members of the families descended from the Ananias. We will go to the town halls and cemeteries of these villages. We’ll learn about how people feel about the preservation of the scholar hierarch’s memory. Our goal is to shed light on the biography of the metropolitan father and to discover the cultural landmarks in his life and activity. In order to achieve the established objective, we will use the method of historical research through documentary, genealogical, topographical and oral tradition.

Wherever we open the literary work of Valeriu Anania, his generous literary creation captures the wonders of the world, so that we could infer that sensitivity is the force that supports the existence under the form of faith glorification in a utterance. The first manifestations of his personality were those in the field of literature, namely in the magazine "Orthodoxy". The religious spirit in which he had grown up as a child and which was becoming more and more solid, as God saved him from so many dangers, was reflected in the pages of the young writer. Poetry is the source that nourishes the entire literary work of Valeriu Anania. The author, who lived in America, experiences the nostalgia of his native universe, this being more obvious in his dramaturgy writings. The poet is a liturgical being, as he calls the grace for the blessing of his works. Valeriu Anania gives a special meaning to the state that the poetic self reaches, his very own self, face to face with himself, as in a real space in which he mixes hope, the feeling of longing for the absolute, anger or everything that shakes the human being.
